🦭 Not all seals are created equal.

As part of our student programme, participants create educational infographics to share what they’ve learned during their time with us. This one was designed by one of our students, @ellaarcari , highlighting some of the key differences between true seals (Phocidae) and fur seals (Otariidae).

Cape fur seals, found along South Africa’s coastline, have small external ear flaps, can rotate their hind flippers beneath their bodies to “walk” on land, and have a thick double coat that once made them a target for the fur trade.

True seals, on the other hand, have no external ear flaps and move by wriggling on land, as their hind flippers remain extended behind them. They also tend to lead more solitary lives than their fur seal relatives.

These student-created resources are a great way to turn research into science communication, helping make marine conservation more accessible while allowing our students to share their knowledge with a wider audience.

Goodbye, Mossel Bay 🌊

This chapter closes with a full heart.

To every person who was part of this journey — thank you. For the support, the lessons, the patience, and the moments that made even the hardest days worth it.

This place pushed me more than I expected. It wasn’t always easy, and honestly, that’s exactly what made it matter. The early mornings, the long days, the things that worked and the things that really didn’t… all of it shaped me.

I leave with real gratitude. For the opportunities, the growth, and the people who showed up for me in ways they probably don’t even realise.

The memories — the tears, the laughs, the hugs, the encouragement, and even the failures — I’ll carry all of it with me.

✨ Little treasures between shifts.
Every now and then the ocean leaves something special on the sand — like this delicate moon jelly we found today. Those four “petals” in the centre are actually its gonads — and in females they turn pink, while in males they stay white. Such a tiny detail, but such a cool one you only catch when you stop and look closely. These gentle drifters are usually harmless to touch, and a quiet reminder to slow down and enjoy the little wonders the sea shares with us. 🌊✨

🎙️ A little late to share, but still such a highlight!

Earlier this year, I had the amazing opportunity to join @oceanesther 🌍 from @earthlegacyfoundation on @sfm_streek Radio to talk about our shared journey with the @captain_fanplastic program and the incredible school outreaches we did in Mossel Bay.

It was such a privilege to discuss the importance of ocean education, plastic awareness, and the power of inspiring the next generation to protect our planet — helping these kids fall in love with the same ocean we hold so dearly in our hearts 🌊💙

Cheers to 3 months of teaching the next generation of marine scientists abroad in South Africa with @oceansresearch

Words can't describe how much this experience has changed me. I never thought I would enjoy teaching, yet at the end of each month I felt myself holding back tears (sometimes unsuccessfully) watching our students leave.

Helping people learn, gain confidence in their abilities, and grow into themselves in a place so far from home is so rewarding. I have met so many amazing people with so many different personalities, learning styles, life stories, attitudes, and interests.

Thank you to my mentors, coworkers, friends, and students, for making this summer so impactful and memorable. I couldn't have asked for a better support system.

#MondayDiscussion:

I’m pleasantly surprised at how many of you have shown interest in the bevy of tap dance organizations, student-run or otherwise, across the United States, Canada, and the world over the last few months.

With the help of a good friend, a list of these organizations has been compiled on a spreadsheet, and I’ll be posting the link to it in my bio shortly. I’ll also post an updated video slideshow of these organizations later. I want to emphasize before I do that I have also included several dance organizations that are not specifically focused on tap, but do offer tap, along with other styles of dance. In my not-so-expert opinion, they matter, as well; especially for those dancers who are also passionate about those other styles.

In the meantime, let’s chat about these tap organizations and how important they are to campus life. For this week’s discussion, if you are a tap dancer currently in college, please tell us where you go to school, and if there is an on-campus tap dance company, ensemble, club, society, small group, etc.

Another thing to consider: it seems like new tap organizations are popping up rather regularly. I can tell you from personal experience that it is indeed possible, albeit challenging. I tried to start one at Western Kentucky University when I was in grad school, but to no avail. If there is not a tap organization at your college or university, would you be willing to start one?
