The human mind relies on cognitive shortcuts.

Biases such as dichotomous (black-and-white) thinking help us reduce complexity, but they also limit perception, emotional flexibility, and psychological insight.

In our recent interview, artist @ellabliss______ reflects on how their artistic practice explores these thresholds of perception.

Ella Walker is an Australian, Berlin-based artist working across mediums to “create and hopefully solve problems”. They are interested in human and non-human ecologies, cycles of growth and decay, and reoccurring mythologies.

We regularly showcase artworks by emerging and established artists @essential_mind @svera.studio. While the artworks are available for purchase, our deeper interest lies in the person behind the work and the psychological dimensions of artistic practice: how art can open doors to inner worlds.

Ella’s work touches on something we also encounter in therapy: dichotomous, black-and-white thinking. Instead of reinforcing those contrasts, Ella gently tries to disrupt them. Darkness, in their work, isn’t negative or painful: it’s the unknown, an invitation to look closer, to step into the space where something new might be waiting.

Their pieces encourage us to stay curious, to explore what usually stays hidden, and to see nuance where our minds might default to extremes.

Opening this Friday at Rundgang UdK Berlin, Open Friday to Sunday.

After a year of working side by side in the studio, the artists removed their furniture, stored it invisibly, painted the walls, and cleaned the floors. They erased most of their traces, yet these persist – a residual coexistence, silent yet insistent.

Each practice carries a whole world within it, metabolising grief, rage, prayer, or dormant witnessing. Some works invent new mythologies to survive what is coming, while others function as archives of memory, refusing erasure. The artworks offer no pretence of solutions. Instead, they remain with what they carry, creating a space to exist without being purified into hope.

“collecting branches for a temporary shelter * tomorrow is perfect” is to desire for myths about anti patriarchal tooth fairies, it is honoring the mother of many, it is to contain the fragility of memory in glass, it is stillness, stuckness, the stickiness of the earth and its radioactivity in between.

Originally conceived as a response to Yoko Ono’s Supply Goods Store Piece, we found our niche in the state-financed culture market and have expanded to over many humps, horns and halos worldwide. At our Gropius Bau pop-up, you can experience the seamless generation of a bespoke product which not only enhances your image but also protects your reputation!
