It was a perfect tale 🐟✨

This past February, I produced and directed a production of Big Fish at the University of Tampa. The story of Big Fish has been close to my heart for as long as I can remember. Edward Bloom is larger than life in every way. The stories he tells are fantastical, brilliant, and life-changing. His journey reminds us to take charge of our own stories—to live courageously and authentically and to love unconditionally with our whole hearts. His story resonates deeply with my own, and having the opportunity to bring this beautiful story to life was a dream come true.

To my cast: I am in awe of your incredible talent and dedication to your craft. Putting this production together in under a month was no small feat, and what you all accomplished in such a short time is truly extraordinary. I am forever grateful for the way you embraced this story and breathed truth and heart into the characters I have loved for so long. I could not imagine a better group of people to bring this show to life.

To my creative team and crew: I could not have done this without each of you. Morgan and Linden, it was an absolute joy having both of you work on the show. Thank you for your hard work. Ambar, you are a visionary choreographer and lighting designer. I will forever be in love with our alabama stomp! Cayley, you are a phenomenal stage manager and the glue that held this show together. Thank you for being our biggest supporter. Bosse, you are a brilliant music director, mentor, and friend. It was an honor learning from and working alongside you.

I have always believed that to live is the greatest gift. Every moment has the potential for unimaginable joy and wonder and magic. You need only to find it. Big Fish inspires us to be attentive, be inventive, and be the first one to rejoice. That spirit defined my time at UTampa and especially my experience working on this production. What a precious gift it was to have this experience in my final semester. It truly was the perfect ending to a perfect tale.

For my mom, who shared with me her love of daffodils.
And for my dad, who taught me how to be the hero of my own story.

May you be the hero of yours.

Dear Diary,

It’s been a whole week since Heathers ended, and I still don’t think my brain has fully processed it. Friends doesn’t feel like the right word for these people anymore. They’re family.

Never in a million years did I imagine my very first time directing a show would be an experience this special. From one of the most packed auditions I’ve ever seen, to the most hype preview in GCP history, to a completely sold out final week, and ultimately becoming the best selling show of the season. This show has been nothing short of a blessing.

I’ll remember the laughs at rehearsal. The late nights. I’ll remember listening to the audience lose their minds over something we had spent months creating. I’ll cherish my moment as the last Steve. You guys will always be my first!

Thank you to every single person who poured their time, talent, energy, and heart into this show. To my cast, my crew, my production team, and everyone who supported us along the way- I genuinely could not have asked for a better group of humans to take this journey with.

I walked into this show hoping to direct a good production.

I walked away with memories, a million stories, and a family.

So I guess this is my final Dear Diary entry… for now.

Thank you, Westerburg. Thank you, GCP. And thank you to every person who made this little beautiful, chaotic, ridiculous, heartbreaking, hilarious show what it was. ❤️💚💛💙

Heathers the Musical | Gainesville Community Playhouse | 2026

You know, I used to be one of those people who didn’t get why people cried on the last show. I had never felt that strongly about it before. I didn’t think realistically that you could get that attached to a show. I mean, shed a tear or two yeah, but after that it’s fine. Maybe get swept up in the emotions of the story and cry a bit. But I wouldn’t necessarily miss anything.

But alas, here we are.

Heathers was a really fun show to do. It was one of the first musicals I was introduced to when I was just a tot watching animation YouTube, and being able to be on stage and do this Musical… girl God is good.

These people were really fun to work with.

Thank you to my cast and crew for making it such an awesome experience. I felt so appreciated and included on this set. YALL really matched my crazy lol. And everyone is so skilled too! I really liked to see everyone do their craft. All of you added so much to my summer that- yes girl - I boohoo cried at our last bows. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you melted my heart of stone or whatever.

Thank you for helping me feel that emotion of missing something. It’s bittersweet, but it’s nice.

And to Duke, thank you for reintroducing me to another part of myself I had long pushed back and allowing it to be center stage (as it should be). At first Duke was my least favorite Heather but now ya’ll needa stop playing on my girl she a baddie and she get what she want, okay?

Being able to be a girl who goes after what she wants with no regard for what others thought was really fun.

And @simply__sammii & @coleycole128 , thank you for being a real kind directors and always checking up on us and respecting our boundaries.

@molly1026 thank you for all your help so I didn’t shut up during Never Shut Up Again.

@ariennelavonne thank you for your choreography AHHHH I had so much fun with it.

And to all my friends who came out to support, I love you guys thank you for standing by me. ❤️

I’m not ready to say goodbye to this cast and crew. I had so many ups and downs throughout this production, but I’m so glad I powered through. I met the most supportive group in the entire world. I love you guys so much!

Dear Diary,
From June 1st to August 9th I have one of the best summer opportunities to meet these wonderful people and polish my craft. I wonder not have traded this experience for everything and I’m so happy I auditioned. From the call backs to the read through I knew that this would be a summer I wouldn’t forget and I was right. So firstly I wanna thank @simply__sammii for giving me this chance and believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself for a good bit. Thank you and every cast and crew member for all the work and love you put into this show because over these past weeks I’ve met so many people in the crowd that have loved it and has made a difference in their lives. Also another thanks to Nicole, Arienne,Sarah, Molly and so many others that I might not remember. From working on choreography to figuring out blocking this has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever been in. And I’m just so blessed to have met this wonderful group of people that I will never forget and hope to never grow apart From.

I will honestly miss so many things from this show and so many people that have made it a home for me and hope to work with these people again. They are my crazy family and I love them. So this is ✨Veronica Sawyer ✨signing off

It is an absolute privilege and longtime dream come true to perform in this particular show especially alongside the most kind, wonderful, extraordinarily talented cast! From ruling the halls of Westerberg to haunting them, Ram Sweeney was big fun. 🐏
I am an incredibly grateful. I thank all of those who came out to see the show especially those who traveled a distance!

Heathers: The Musical

When I first auditioned for this show and didn’t get cast I was devastated but I am so glad I stuck around and did crew because this was such an amazing experience! Thank you so much to this cast and crew, you are all amazing and I hope I get to work with all of you again someday! Love you guys! Go Rottweilers!
