The sharp shuffle of mahjong tiles takes me back to childhood in LA. Five families would gather each Saturday: kids at choir practice, then dim sum lunch together before caravanning to one family’s home (rotating each weekend). The parents played mahjong from afternoon until night while we kids entertained ourselves to pass the time alongside their ritual.

When we moved to New York, we no longer had the Saturday routine or the community that we had in LA. Suddenly, it was just the four of us—my parents, Kelly, and me. Learning mahjong became both a rite of passage and a way to hold onto what we’d left behind.

These past few years, I’ve slowly felt drawn back to the game. So when @rebeccawdavis asked me if I’d teach her and six friends in January, it gave a renewed purpose to this rekindled passion.

At my first Beginner’s Mahjong 101 workshop, we progressed from watching an intro video, to diving deeper via a Powerpoint deck, to ultimately forming teams to play. A month later when the group reconvened, they hadn’t just remembered the rules—they’d embraced the ritual and community of the game.

This Sunday, I’m hosting another intimate beginner’s class to hopefully inspire more to do the same. Come learn more than a game—come learn a way of being together in community ♥️
