For our second-ever theme week, we're exploring Tulsa through the lens of urbanism.

This week we're talking all things built environment, we're talking housing, we're talking post-war car culture, and how we can make this city better for more people. Here are some of the themes that popped up as we planned and executed on this batch of stories for you:

🏢 Tulsa's eternal problem of low population density
🏢 Public-private partnerships and how Tulsa actually works
🏢 How suburban sprawl affects the city's housing market
🏢 How the built environment invites or excludes certain people or groups

Thanks to our fantastic sponsors at @methodgroup_ for supporting Urbanism Week! All these stories are available to read right now at thepickup.com!

Second quilt project (obviously heavily inspired by the gees bend greats) made out of Aunt Jane’s remnants is off to its new home with @ellen_k_slay and @clax_2the_max to celebrate their perfect union. Couldn’t think of a better home for this labor of love.

For Ellen Ray, @machocity/Richard Zimmerman's new "Assembly," a temporary art installation on the Plaza of the Americas between 7th and 8th Streets on Denver, sparks more creative thinking about the development of downtown Tulsa and the role of public art in modern city life than any dissertation or discussion possibly could. It’s exactly the type of public artwork Tulsa lacks—and what it needs.

At the link in bio, @ellen_k_slay writes about the purpose of public art, its upsides, and its follies, diving into the history behind the Plaza of the Americas and Tulsa's budget--and appetite--for public art. Read it all at thepickup.com.

Urban Core Art Project celebrates the opening of “Assembly” by Richard Zimmerman at the Plaza of the Americas, 702 S. Denver Ave.

Consisting of 21 sculptures and 3 benches, the sculptural forms are built from recycled plastic and metal objects sourced locally in Tulsa which have been affixed to metal armatures and wrapped in fiberglass cast tape.

“Assembly” responds to the plaza’s existing features while introducing new paths of movements for pedestrians.

Visitors can scan QR codes to view what items make up each sculpture, and to see Zimmerman’s process.

Since 2012, UCAP has worked to bring public art to underutilized spaces in downtown Tulsa through temporary site specific installations.
