The end of a literal era that shaped me into the artist I am today!!!

After travelling in 2019 and then living on the ninch, I decided to move back to Naarm in 2020 and giving the full time art life a crack.

I stumbled upon Honey Bones online and there just happed to be one studio available, alongside @melinamcgough.art @flgbrnr.tattoo. In 2021 had my first solo show ‘Dogs Breakfast’ in the gallery downstairs. HB was rapidly growing so we moved from Collingwood to a warehouse in Brunswick East.

The warehouse had been empty for years, and it was so amazing to witness the HB community come together to transform it into a gallery and studios. I shared a studio with Britt and I was at the peak of my career, I had constant work and was living off just my art for a short time which is still a huge accomplishment of mine.

Toward the end of 2022 my mental health took a turn so I left HB to move to Newy - but after 2 years away I was welcomed straight back into the community, this time there was a new edition called Elsie. A cafe was also about to open in the space called @littlehomey.cafe !!!

Then the twins arrived and I saw my best mates become parents of 3. It was sooooo emotional but also something definitely had to change.

@britdevlin is genuinely the most patient person I know and has been the silent assassin behind the whole development of honey bones and the reason it has been so steady and successful for 7 years. She’s also the most incredible mother/businesswoman and I’m honoured to have a friend and role model like her.

@jeswri is the most talented artist I know, the ideas in his brain are literally unmatched. He stands up for what he believes in with an intensity not many are able to do. He also has a heart of gold and only wants the best for his fellow artist friends.

I’m sooooo honoured to have had these two people shape my career and to continue being friends throughout the intense ups and downs of existing as creative people. I can’t wait to see what they do next 💛💛💛

Ps: HB isn’t completely closing down it’s just changing owners and transforming into another inclusive space for creatives so stay tuned!!!

They’re back and I’m even more excited to share the cover for Book 2! What’s that buried under the bog?! 🔍

💚
Mae, Shonda, Aoife, Beck and the first years at Our Lady school head to Connemara Survival Centre for a weekend of hiking, shelter building and fun. Then Mae stumbles into a bog and finds herself clutching the cold, dead hand of a corpse. The gang, along with some annoying boys from the other visiting school, start investigating a decades-old mystery but when another body surfaces, the Common Criminals’ Club start to wonder if this cold case is warming.

This book was a pleasure to read. The author takes the classic “girl at boarding school solving a murder” setup and pushes it somewhere new. The setting is refreshingly far from snobby: a run-down Catholic school with a serious bat problem in the chapel.

The story centres on four girls from very different backgrounds, each bringing their own strengths to the group, plus a suitably nasty pack of bullies for good measure. Things kick off when Mae, sent to fetch a punnet of butter during her home ed lesson, has a cadaver literally fall on top of her. From there it’s a race to figure out who the body belongs to, and once a second (and nearly a third) murder happens, the hunt is well and truly on.

The author captures beautifully what it’s like to live in a small village, where everyone knows each other and pretty much everyone is related in some odd way. The story is set in winter Ireland, and I’ll admit I felt genuinely jealous of the characters at times, sitting here in 34 degrees and counting.

The writing is superb, accessible and witty. I kept getting stared at by my husband and daughter because I was laughing out loud. The whole thing is written as a logbook kept by Mae, which gives it a really fun, personal feel. It kept me guessing right until the end, and yup, I miserably failed to identify the culprit.

I really hope this is the first of a very long series. I can’t wait to see what the CCC gets up to next.

The Common Criminals Club- Death before Detention
Written by Alison Weatherby @alisonweatherbyauthor
Illustrated by Ellen Porteus @ellenporteus
Published by Pan Mac Millan @panmacmillan

Mae and her friends, Shonda, Aoife and Beck are classmates in a boarding school in the west of Ireland. They have formed a group they refer to as The Common Criminals Club (but others refer to it as ‘the nerd group’). They have not actually been involved in investigating or solving any crimes, yet.
Their cosy existence is turned on its head one morning when, while getting butter out of the fridge, a body falls on Mae. From that point on, the girls are invested in figuring out what happened and why.
As the mystery unravels, more bodies show up, secret upon secret is revealed and nobody is quiet sure what or who to believe.

I really enjoyed reading this book. While the topics of death and murder could be heavy for a middle grade book, Alison dealt with them with such an Irish level of humour that ensures an enjoyable, interesting read. The illustrations added a level of humour and interest that I know young readers enjoy,
Each chapter took us deeper into the mystery as the plot revealed secret after secret. The pace ensured it was a page turner as you needed to find out more.

I’d highly recommend this book, and I will be recommending it to many young readers I know.
The next instalment, School Trip Survival is out next year, promising more exciting adventures from this fun group.
