From the Museum collection: see a rare triunial magic lantern from 1877.

Developed in 17th-century Europe, the magic lantern was essentially an early slide projector that used a light source and lens to project images from transparent slides. By the late 18th century, magic lantern shows had become a popular form of entertainment, with skilled “lanternists” thrilling audiences with the illusion of movement.

Visit the Museum to see this unique triunial lantern in a new gallery installation. The lantern is equipped with three lenses for special effects such as dissolves—where one image gradually fades into another—and wheels that allowed it to move closer to or farther from a screen, offering the illusion of an image getting larger or smaller.

Also on view are 19th-century dissolving view slide sets and a video by filmmaker/lanternist Joel Schlemowitz (@elliottschlemowitzmagiclantern) that evokes the experience of a magic lantern performance.
