For the past 2 years, I greeted the incoming new year with a photo of myself alone, in line with the solitude and disconnect that we all experienced then. But in 2022, I reclaimed my former life, as many of you did; armed with my vaccinations, boosters, and a whole lot of thoughtfulness, I traveled, re-connected, ate communally, visited museums and theaters together with like-minded audiences. Yes it was still a tough year on many fronts, but the optimism, the joy, the gratitude to be back in-person with friends and family, made it more bearable and more hopeful. So here's a small reel of my indelible memories of 2022, filled with people who matter to me very much in Seattle, Chicago, Portland, Las Vegas, San Diego, Minneapolis, Seoul, and looking forward to making more memories with them and many others in the year of expected grace, 2023. As my gal Lizzo says in the song:

"Turn up the music, turn down the lights
I got a feelin' I'm gon' be alright
Okay (okay), alright
It's about damn time"

Yep, IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

For years, Filipinos who live in or travel to Seattle, as well as chefs and food writers such as Andrew Zimmern, who featured it in his TV show "Bizarre Foods", and Marcus Samuelson who did the same in his own show "No Passport Required", and the informed diners who follow them, knew that one of the essential stops when one visited Seattle's iconic Pike Place Market, was Oriental Mart Filipino Restaurant. Tucked away in one of the Market's maze-like annexes, it's a counter spot that serves deliciously classic Filipino food like adobo and pancit, as well as an otherworldly, showstopping salmon belly sinigang, which harmoniously marries the tart simplicity of the Filipino soup with the richness and decadence of the best part of the Pacific Northwest's king fish. In 2020, the James Beard Awards acknowledged the greatness of Oriental Mart that all of us have known for so long by giving it an America's Classic honor, bestowed on the country's most beloved and most timeless restaurants. So I was thrilled to bring my visiting dear friends to Oriental Mart as we made our way around Pike Place Market to taste that unsurpassable sinigang, the most luscious fried daing na bangus, and the crispest lumpiang Shanghai. And what a treat to spend time with Oriental Mart owner and sole cook "Tita Lei" Leila Rosas, whose enthusiasm for Filipino food and those who love it is beyond compare.
