At Laba Laba, what reaches your plate matters as much as how it looks. Every meal is nourishing, honest and free of anything artificial, because looking after our guests means looking after their health too.

We work closely with local farmers who can trace every ingredient back to its source. Eighty percent of what we serve is organic. We won’t stop until it’s all of it.

Church bells, shifting light and the quiet of a tiny French village. La Lisière is a pair of architectural cabins in Jumigny, 90 minutes northeast of Paris in the Champagne region. Cutting-edge design meets the French countryside, with a South African soul.

'It’s a beautifully curated little bolthole, a chance to escape the city and reboot and dream,' enthused Helen Untiedt after her visit in September. 'There’s something quite special about staying in the homes of our hideaway owners who understand layering and the comfort of understated luxury. La Lisière is every bit as cocooning as their South African cabin home, The Herenberg, in Rosendal in the Eastern Free State.’

There is a tree growing across Tswalu's 118,000 hectares that has sustained this landscape for centuries. The shepherd's tree, Boscia albitrunca, is a food source, a pharmacy, a wayfinding tool, and the architecture for some of the Kalahari's most complex wildlife relationships. If you've ever seen a sociable weaver nest in one, you'll understand. ⁠

UBUNTU LODGE

Designed around a series of stone walls that extend into the surrounding landscape, defining the main spaces of the lodge and creating a sequence of courtyards and open areas.

Set within a tamboti forest, the architecture responds directly to its context through a combination of locally appropriate materials and carefully considered openings. Timber screens provide privacy while allowing filtered views and natural light into the spaces, while extensive glazing and covered decks strengthen the connection between the interior and the surrounding bush.

The stone walls provide a strong architectural structure, contrasted with timber ceilings, decks and screens that bring warmth to the spaces. Throughout the lodge, the design uses changes in level, courtyards and open-plan spaces to create a gradual transition between enclosed and outdoor areas.

NEW & LAUNCHING SOON! Risen from the ashes… and inspired by an old monastery.

For those of you who remember the cover of our first book, featuring the flat-roofed stone house called Bobbejaansberg, this will bring tears to your eyes. We are thrilled to welcome the serene Mura Retreat (sleeps 14) into the fold and can’t wait to share more of her new look with you.

‘There are houses that borrow from their landscape, and houses that surrender to it entirely. This home, set beneath the Langeberg mountain range, is unmistakably the latter,’ begins writer Kerryn Fischer in the recently published architectural story in ‘Elle Decoration UK’.

The new owners ‘arrived with a brief that was as much spiritual as architectural: a modern take on a Karoo farmhouse, woven through with monastic restraint. Croatia-based architect Antonio Zaninovic remotely conceived the initial design concept but, unable to execute it from abroad, handed the project to South African architectural designer Marlon Leggat. Together with builder Stuart Saggers, Marlon modelled the home on an old monastery, with deep-set windows borrowed in spirit from Le Corbusier’s chapel at Ronchamp’.

How do you make an exclusive-use private safari villa feel distinctive?

At @singita_ Milele in Tanzania, we looked to texture, craft, art and collaboration render the scale down into moments that feel warm, considered and personal. The villa’s lounge and dining area achieves this with a special, hand-woven artwork by @coralandhive hanging on the wall.

When Laba Laba’s owners Xavier Marie and Julie Brisson found this hilltop site in the western Serengeti - the views unbroken, the nearest lodge miles off - they knew what it demanded. ‘We didn't want another safari camp with art on the walls,’ says Xavier. ‘We wanted a place built around both in equal measure - where the architecture holds the art, and the art holds its own against the view.' Today, Laba Grumeti Art Lodge stands as that place - African art, design and creativity given room to breathe, with the Serengeti as witness.
