Meet Elsa! 🩵

Elsa is thrilled to be working on the volunteer recruitment side of the Kato Fun Run! As Events and Volunteer Engagement Manager at Greater Mankato Growth, this is right up her alley.

Elsa is a recent graduate of MSU, and since graduating, loved finding ways to support and get involved in the local community. She has also always had a passion for people. She believes empathy and positivity are important things to spread in the community. So, the Kato Fun Run was a great opportunity to get involved in!

A fun fact is that her husband, Matt Haley, organizes a suicide prevention walk in Jackson, MN. Another fun fact about Elsa is that being active and running is a passion of hers. She can’t wait to see the event come to life!

Suicide is hard to talk about.

At 18, I lost one of my best friends. His passing wasn't from suicide, but I learned very young what it felt like to have your entire world change and then somehow be expected to keep going to school, work - not to mention experiencing the grief of his friends and family.

The summer after high school, I started work as a florist, where I put together an unimaginable number of funeral arrangements for children.

Years later, I became a drumline coach for the Lancers. When a local student died by suicide, it was awful seeing how visibly shaken the kids were - even those who hadn't known them personally.

In 2023, I started working at Greater Mankato Area United Way, where our campaign that year focused on youth mental health and suicide. We had reports of children in preschool having suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Those are all very different experiences, but they left me wishing I could do more.

Back in April, I had the idea for a fun run. Pretty quickly into planning it, I realized I could not do this by myself. At all.

Thankfully, I have an incredible group of people who have volunteered their time on top of everything else they have going on. They're bringing skills I don't have, and taking on entire pieces of this event.

Kato Fun Run is an independent, community-led 5K fundraiser benefiting Greater Mankato Area United Way's youth mental health and suicide prevention initiatives. Despite what we are raising money for, I want Kato Fun Run to focus on celebrating life and everything that makes it joyful.

On May 22, 2027, we're getting together in North Mankato for a 5K fun run, live music, activities, community resources, bounce houses for kids AND adults, and whatever other ridiculous things we manage to come up with between now and May.

If you want to participate, volunteer, sponsor us, donate something we need, share, or follow along, we'd really love to have you.

I hope to see you there! 💗
