Since his debut as Eluvium in 2003, composer and recording artist Matthew Robert Cooper (@eluvium) has developed a distinct style within ambient music, moving between intimate piano compositions and layered electronic soundscapes. His work extends to film scoring and Inventions, an experimental duo with Mark T. Smith of Explosions in the Sky.

Matthew’s latest release, Virga III, continues this spirit of experimentation, drawing inspiration from overlooked landscapes and miniature ecosystems in everyday environments.

Sound has also been central to Matthew’s longstanding collaboration with Bobby, beginning with the immersive soundscapes he composed for Place for Continuous Eye Contact. Now Sound Director of the Foundation, Matthew has created Artifact 1 for the reflection space within Losing Ourselves Together at @toledomuseum — inspired by Mount Beacon Reservoir, the composition evokes wind, water, and reflected light through synthesized sound.

This Saturday, October 17, Matthew will present two live sound collage performances celebrating the exhibition’s opening at @toledomuseum. Echoing Bobby’s belief in the power of art to foster connection and well-being, Matthew hopes to offer audiences a moment of peace and reflection through sound.

This Saturday, October 17, join us at @toledomuseum for two special live performances by @eluvium (Matthew Robert Cooper), presented in celebration of the opening of Losing Ourselves Together: The Art of Bobby Anspach.

A longtime collaborator of Bobby’s, Cooper composed the immersive soundscapes that accompanied his Place for Continuous Eye Contact sculptures. For this special program, he will present a live sound collage inspired by pulse, breath, and the patterns of thought that emerge in meditative states.

Accompanied by visual projections from Toledo-based @filterstudiospace, the performance will transform the museum’s GlasSalon into an immersive environment of sound, light, movement, and reflection.

The afternoon and evening programs will begin with remarks from Paige Rozanski, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Toledo Museum of Art.

Roads that remember their own headlights, then loneliness painted in two colours that match the Earth.

Side A drives Mulholland in 1937 with the windows down, borrows names for unknown places the way lungs borrow air, lives in the comma of a virga that never lands, otherizes you into a pleasant hum, steps into a Toronto river that has already left for the lake, and works the grove after hours at the speed of sap.

Side B opens the other six petals: an altostratiform spirit message from Cloud School, Haku drawing a thin white line across Vespera, autumn filing unopened wishes so they can fall unnoticed, a serenade from a field that forgot its stars on purpose, a Brasstown Bridge baptism you did not schedule, and pale blue and white echoing until loneliness looks like a planet.

Overall mood: Contemplative, watery, and quietly migratory — full of Imaginary North hush, Passed Oceans dunkings, and weather that keeps the certificate. Perfect for dusk listening, dry shoes beside the river, or sitting still while the next spool still waits.

Day 1520: Eluvium - Life Through Bombardment Vol. 2 box set. # 451. Sometimes you take a stack of records to sell to the record store and you come home with a totally gorgeous box set of ambient music. Similes and Nightmare Ending are my two favorite Eluvium releases so I had to get this. The presentation is incredible and I got to dig into some Eluvium stuff I hadn’t heard yet. Also it’s got a record of B sides from Similes. I gotta be honest with y’all, though, I cannot listen to this full box set today. I slept poorly and I would conk out so soon. I have to be transparent

Musician and composer @eluvium (Matthew Cooper) first collaborated with Bobby by creating the immersive soundscapes for Place for Continuous Eye Contact. As Sound Director for the Bobby Anspach Studios Foundation and a juror for its inaugural grants, he reflects on witnessing artists extend those ideas in entirely new ways through sound, light, perception, and experiences that invite us to see one another differently.

This October, Bobby’s work returns home.

Born in Toledo, Bobby believed art could help us see ourselves, each other, and the world differently. This fall, the @toledomuseum presents Losing Ourselves Together: The Art of Bobby Anspach, the first major American museum exhibition dedicated to his work.

Bringing together immersive installations, paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, the exhibition also debuts an adapted version of Place for Continuous Eye Contact, extending the experience to visitors of varying physical abilities.

Over the coming months, we’ll share more about the exhibition, the works on view, and the ideas that shaped Bobby’s practice.
