Over three decades, Elvis Richardson has examined how identity is built, projected and unsettled, exploring who gets to belong - and on what terms.

Now showing at Wollongong Art Gallery, new and key works by the acclaimed Melbourne-based interdisciplinary artist feature in EDGE CITY.

EDGE CITY | ELVIS RICHARDSON

I’ve been thinking about Elvis Richardson’s work since the late 90s, so EDGE CITY feels like a conversation that’s been unfolding over decades.

Elvis has always worked with what’s already out there and in circulation — crime scene images, found YouTube videos, real estate photos, art world data — to ask who gets to belong, and on what terms. Here that focus lands on the interiors and thresholds of suburbia, deconstructing the systems that shape how we live.

EDGE CITY unfolds across two chapters, with a companion exhibition drawn from the WAG collection bringing in artists thinking through place, industry, memory and change, particularly here in Wollongong.

Hello -👋 - those three ‘Bombshells’ - machinic femme collages at top - from my time 2008-2009 as an artist in residence at @gertrudecontemporary - are featured in a cool show curated by @artbank for International Women’s Day!

Artbank presents – ‘Difficult Women: Art, Activism and Identity. Women artists from the Artbank collection.’

The word ‘difficult’ has a long and gendered history as a term used to describe women on the forefront of change. This exhibition celebrates some of the trail blazing, groundbreaking, ceiling defying, change making, boundary pushing, unconventional, pioneering and history writing, Australian women artists from the Artbank collection, who through their arts practice, have sought to drive social and political change.

Art has a profound ability to sidestep the dominant narrative, encouraging new empathies and sparking new dialogue and ways of thinking. The urge to question, the compulsion to create and the desire to define one’s own place in the world are all cultivators of change. Change is difficult but without it where would we be! So, as a celebration of International Women’s Day – thank you to the ‘difficult’ women of the world. To name a few of our favourites from the Artbank collection –
