We are very excited to welcome another new artist, Em!

em north/em16 (they/them) is a tattooer, activist, and visual artist. em loves drawing, working with people, and cracking grandpa jokes. em was raised in NJ and moved to NYC in 1997 where they’ve spent the majority of their adult life.

em began tattooing in 2009 in Brooklyn, NY shortly after finishing their MFA in art. Before tattooing, em worked as a graphic designer and crisis counselor at nonprofits.

In 2016, em opened The Scarlet Letter, a tattoo studio providing a safe(r) space to folks who didn’t feel comfortable in typical shops. In 2021, in search of more space and time to make art, em decided begin their move to Philadelphia. They currently spend 75% of their time in Philly and are looking forward to a building a community and life here.

When not tattooing, em works as a college professor and makes large-scale paintings and drawings, which you can check out on em16.com.

DM us or @em16 directly for appointments! 🌼

Rarely do I base tattoos off of other artists’ work, but the style of these line drawings by @octopusaday worked great with my style, and the artist gave us permission! Done with tight 3 and single needle in one session. Thank you S for the footage!

Photographer @erikakapin took these amazing photos during her tattoo session. She also mentioned that she’s been doing photo organizing projects for personal collections during the pandemic winter, which I think is a brilliant idea (boy are my harddrives a mess of photos from the past)! Hit her up for photos or organizing sessions. 😍 Also this is my last month in my lovely temp home in Greenpoint. Wow that went fast! Ironically, @anka.tattoo and @katnoirink were the best studio mates ever and I wish I could make it last a little longer. 😍 I won’t be tattooing in April, and May is still in question while I recover from lots of hard work and transition. 😍 Join my mailing list on my website to be the first to know when books open again. em16.com

Accepting January requests: em16.com/book

Cases are going up so a couple things to protect all of us:
1. I will be screening all clients and taking your temp upon arrival.
2. I’m asking that all clients get tested regularly. In nyc, it’s free at testing centers, or you can do an online home test (dm me for a link). I’ll be getting tested every week.
3. Please avoid congregate settings for at least 2 weeks before your appointment. This includes protests, large outdoor gatherings, crowded cafes that are not open air and safely distanced, taking off masks around folks who are not in your pod. If you must take public transit please take extreme caution and keep a distance from others. If you fly outside of the state, please make sure your travel is completed 2 weeks before your appointment. All of this applies to folks you pod closely with. I’m taking these precautions.
