If we want to change the way our children view the collaborative partnership of parenting we have to first recognize the ways in which patriarchy runs on the unpaid labor of women/moms*

There are a million little ways we've been indoctrinated to value to efforts of male parents/dads/non gestating parents over birthing parents/moms/women.

This is where the conversation around mental labor begins.
Who wraps gifts?
Who organizes the holidays?
Who participates in family text threads to keep gatherings and birthdays and meals running smoothly?
Who is seen folding laundry and putting it away?
Who unpacks the car?
Who knows where everything is?
Who schedules appointments and where does that information live?

Externalizing the mental load isn't just about sharing the load, it's about showing our children the value of that load- the meaningfulness of that invisible / mental labor and how it shapes and supports our families and lives. It's about teaching them to participate not only in doing the work of community and family participation, but also in valuing it.

Everyone works to keep the family operating smoothly, and everyone should get to be the Fun Parent, too.

*It's hard to talk about this without looking at it through a cis/hetero lens because that is the default lens of patriarchy.

In pregnancy there can be a feeling of waiting for permission- waiting for the first trimester to end, for the baby to arrive, for the fourth trimester to close, for the first birthday- too feel like you are “really a parent.”

Parenting is just living your life while also trying to show someone else how earth works. You already know how to parent in the same way that you know how to live.

What’s cool about parenting is that it cracks you open and shows you all your vulnerability and tenderness and reorders your priorities and that can be sometimes viewed as a negative but I think it actually just gives us permission to live how we want and prioritize the things we always desired and needed deep down.

The zero f*cks you have to give in new parenting can actually be a super power.

Sweet opening last week - thanks for coming out :') Show alongside @em_finbar at @duckcreekarts is up all month! An excerpt from gorgeous press release written by my favorite poetically-inclined psychoanalyst Kendra Terry @kgmt :
Their artifacts attest to the mere existence of bodies in gravity, those which by definition must be pulled into contact with that which is distinctly Something Else. But in the associative abstract we must not forget the skin and breasts and spit and kissing, and water and bricks, and graphite and wood, and darkness and light, motion and its opposite, image and its negative, flection, in-flection, re-flection, the projection and imitation of fabric, of flesh, and the way materials touch each other, prompting us to wonder, what it would be like to notice ourselves noticing ourselves.
