POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
13 years ago the world finally got introduced to Drill music, born right here on the streets of Chicago. At the time it was a particular group of young kids that took the genre to another level — Chief Keef, Lil Durk, and Lil Reese. They weren’t officially a group, but the world got introduced to them as a movement… GBE, OTF, Lamron, 300… the list goes on forever, but you get the picture.

I got the call from OG Jay Boogie telling me he needed me to shoot a couple videos for Lil Reese. This particular record was “Bad,” and he told me don’t worry about the budget because the label had it covered — Def Jam. Yeah, Drill music had become the next big thing and the industry was paying attention.

I remember pulling up to Lamron and it felt like the whole neighborhood was outside. There were so many people at the shoot they literally had a tour bus parked in the trenches. Young Chop was there, one of the architects of the Drill sound. Hell Rell from Dipset popped out randomly which was crazy dope. Lil Durk was dealing with legal issues at the time so people were rocking “Free Durk” shirts everywhere. Street legends, kids, OGs… everybody was outside celebrating one of their own making it.

The energy was love. Real genuine love. I even let my son Lil Will jump in the video doing the Lil Reese dance because this was the first generation that truly mastered the internet. My little guy already knew every word to the songs and knew exactly who these artists were.

Back then the internet mattered… but you still had to be outside in the streets for the culture to really move. Chicago created something the world could never duplicate.
