POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A few moments backstage with @barbara_bates , celebrating 40 years in fashion. The last-minute adjustments, the outfit changes, and a little time for selfies before the show. 🖤

Loved being there to capture it all.

What happens when we give young creatives the space, resources, and opportunity to see the value in their own imagination? We witnessed it firsthand. During @thechicagofashionweek, we had the honor of bringing Made on the West Side: Youth Fashion Market to life, creating a space where young artists from @nashfinearts could showcase their creativity, share their stories, and experience what it means to be entrepreneurs.

This work has never been just about fashion. It’s about access, ownership, economic opportunity, and reminding our youth that their creativity is not only valuable but worthy of investment. Every piece displayed represented more than a finished product. It represented a young person learning that their ideas deserve to take up space, their voices deserve to be heard, and their talents can create opportunities for themselves and their communities.

We are deeply grateful to every educator, creative, organization, sponsor, and community member who helped make this vision a reality. From the classrooms to the runway of entrepreneurship, this was a collective effort rooted in love, intention, and possibility. Special gratitude to the incredible students and @hailey.rodden at Nash Elementary. You are the heartbeat of this work. And to everyone who showed up, purchased a piece, shared a resource, or poured into these young creatives, thank you. Because investing in the creative economy starts with investing in the imagination of the next generation.

some of my favorite moments from the drip lab: made on the west side event last friday!

one of my goals as a teacher is to give my students hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to feel what it’s like to be a working artist! this event gave students the chance to be part of the official program for @thechicagofashionweek and sell their own designs. our class raised $658.85 for class funds, and students will work together to decide whether they want to purchase materials for another project, put the money toward a field trip, or even have a class party!
students had full autonomy over what they created and how they priced their work. eilo ended up selling all three pieces in his hat collection for over $400 — AS A 6TH GRADER!!!
this event wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing collaborators @maisonmogulconsulting @emanifigaro and @rocity, who have been leading this work alongside me for 3 years now! together, we’re creating more opportunities for students to connect with designers and artists who look like them and come from their neighborhoods! #representationmatters ❤️
huuuuge thank you to @geniuslabchicago @professorsteward for helping out in the classroom during all of our drip lab sessions! you really know how to connect with the students and inspire them to turn their dreams into reality!!
thank you to all of the guest artists who came, shared their experiences, and mentored our students project runway style!!
and thank you to @drinkmondaycoffee and @starlingbyduo for welcoming us into your space and allowing this event to really come to life!
i’m so inspired and grateful to be able to live my life as an artist while teaching my students that they can be anything they work toward achieving. giving them the space to create, take ownership of their work, and see what’s possible for themselves is what it’s all about. ✨🍎

Creative infrastructure starts in the classroom.

Meet Corion, one of the talented young artists in Ms. @hailey.rodden art class at @nashfinearts ! In this video, he’s showing off his original designs, including a piece inspired by his faith and the words “God Has a Plan,” referencing Jeremiah 29:11.

And today, you’ll have the opportunity to see his creativity in person at Made on the West Side: Youth Fashion Market, part of @thechicagofashionweek! This week marked the final week of our DRIP Lab programming, in collaboration with @geniuslabchicago. The young creatives have spent their time learning that fashion is more than designing something beautiful. It’s also about storytelling, entrepreneurship, ownership, and understanding the economics of creativity.

They’ve finalized their pieces, written the inspiration and reasoning behind each design, established their prices, and prepared to introduce their work to the world. And here’s what makes this especially meaningful: 100% of the proceeds from their sales will go back into their collective art classroom. Those funds will help purchase heat presses, hat presses, supplies, and other equipment so students can continue experimenting, producing, and developing their creative skills.

Because talent is everywhere, but access to creative infrastructure is not. When we invest in creative education, we’re not simply funding an art project. We’re helping young people develop technical skills, financial literacy, confidence, and the ability to turn their ideas into economic opportunities.

Come support our next generation of Chicago designers!

We are so honored to be able to partner with such an amazing organization, such as @maisonmogulconsulting and @emanifigaro and her team.

I have spent most of my adult life pouring into the dreams of young people particularly in Black and Brown communities. I give God all the glory for having full circle moments like this where I can still share my gifts and talents with young people from all over the City of chicago and throughout the world. Thank you to all of the community partners especially Nash Fine Arts Academy in the Austin community on Chicago’s Westside.

Thanks to @v.a.b @daniel.hurtt @patchpartyclubofficial @hailey.rodden @rocity @jbfromchicag @djrich100 @nashfinearts @professorsteward @drinkmondaycoffee @geniuslabchicago @starlingbyduo and all the other supporters and sponsors.

I hope you are able to come out Friday, October 9 at 6 PM and see the amazing creative works of the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders. And if you can’t make it in person that’s fine, you can always make it in donations. 😆 😆 😆. LBVS I am grateful to be able to share this moment with you.

Please feel free to share with others. You already know what it is ✌🏿

PROUD MARY: BEYOND FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Sometimes it doesn’t start with violence. Sometimes it starts with an introduction. An opportunity. A mentor. Someone who believes in your work. And somewhere along the way, support becomes control. Access becomes leverage. Boundaries begin moving. And behavior that once felt like care starts feeling like something else.

Because grooming does not always announce itself. It can look like excessive attention. Isolation disguised as protection. Small boundaries being tested before larger ones are crossed. Financial support that becomes dependence. Professional access that suddenly comes with personal expectations.

And in creative communities, where work, friendship, mentorship, collaboration, nightlife, and relationships often overlap, recognizing those dynamics can become even harder. With more than 1 in 3 women experiencing intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and/or stalking in their lifetime, we need spaces to talk about what happens before abuse becomes obvious.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, @maisonmogulconsulting , @dagurlsbathroom , and @sarahs_inn are bringing women in Chicago’s creative community together for an intimate, living-room-style conversation about grooming, domestic violence, boundaries, power dynamics, warning signs, healthy relationships, and how we protect ourselves and each other.

This won’t be a traditional panel. We’re creating room to talk, listen, ask the uncomfortable questions, learn from @sarahs_inn, connect with resources, and leave better equipped to recognize the signs in our own lives and communities.

American society pushes men to become business owners & entrepreneurs. To earn all the money, buy land, invest in stocks, have a family, build generational wealth etc etc etc. But what isn’t highlighted enough are the pressures that men go through along that journey of entrepreneurship. They don’t highlight the dark hours, lonely nights, self doubt, and mountains worth of pressure placed on men’s shoulders to achieve what society deems as the “ideal” man. The man who makes the choice everyday to be an entrepreneur is a man that fights silent battles and keeps his head down so much so that he might not notice when the battles have already been won. So Anthony and Chris of Condesa Coffee shed light on what those some of those pressures can be and challenge what being a true man looks like.

The big mystery as to how this wonderful partnership began was more ordinary than you might think. It started at the Gym! Chris frequented the same gym as Anthony, and in between sets they would talk about Anthony’s coffee shop and Chris would offer to do the pest control. Due to his persistence, this was the beginning of a several year long partnership that has gotten Condesa Coffee where it is today!
A lesson can be learned here that you can find opportunities in the most mundane places but those opportunities won’t be available if you aren’t persistent in your approach to achieving what you want.
