Yesterday I talked about Eva Hesse’s paintings at DDDD in Tribeca. Jan Dickey hosted an afternoon of art-history storytelling with John W. Wagner on William Glackens, Emily Chun on Albert Pinkham Ryder, and me. Thank you to everyone who came!

DDDD opened on the Lower East Side in 2022 and moved to Leonard Street last year. We were surrounded by Jan’s new show, “Compression.”

Look at those surfaces. The paint cracks and wrinkles; sometimes only a point or an edge of a star shows through. In his windowless Brooklyn studio, Jan used a lamp and a mirror etched with a five-pointed star to project the shape, tracing it from different angles.

I love his colors. He told me the work was inspired by the Siena show at the Met, one of the most incredible exhibitions I’ve ever seen—all that gold leaf glowing against dark walls. Looking at his yellows and cracked surfaces, I could see the connection. I wish I could paint. Imagine coming home from that show and knowing what to do with a brush.

“Compression” is up through November 14 at 79 Leonard Street. @jan.dickey @dddd.pictures @emchun @jawnwagner

Afterward, the storytellers and assorted friends went to Walker’s for drinks and dinner. I’ve been going for decades. It became Walker’s in 1987, but there’s been a bar at North Moore and Varick since the 1880s. Before that it was Vic’s, where Washington Market’s truck drivers drank. The owners uncovered the old wooden bar beneath seven coats of black paint and a Formica top. The chili was excellent, by the way.

I told the younger crowd about growing up when the drinking age was 18. By the time I got there, it was 19. I finally became legal, and a few months later they raised it to 21. They took it back.

They stared at me like I was describing the Civil War. Then I told them about getting fake IDs at 14 at Postermat on 8th Street. Mine said I attended Stevens Institute of Technology, an engineering school in New Jersey. The clubs barely glanced at our IDs. There we were, very young teenagers in very grown-up rooms.

I was so happy to be back there with this bunch.
