EMELI THEANDER Château de Jau, France Emeli Theander’s brilliant paintings and drawings are currently on display in the unique setting of the Château de Jau. The exhibition is intended as an exploration of wild, dreamlike, and mysterious realms. Each work by Emeli is an enigma: mirror effects, figures in strange poses, disjointed ballets of ghostly figures, settings of optical illusions, references to classical paintings that leave an impression of strange familiarity... The deceptive shadow becomes a bestial alter ego. The breastfed child seems to have cannibalistic urges. One might well doubt whether Thetis is bathing Achilles in the waters of immortality or attempting to drown him. The line is soft, caressing; the oil paint is applied in lavish strokes, and the colors are sweet, yet the atmosphere is filled with a poisonous strangeness. The mountains, streams, ponds, and forests form a Garden of Eden where everything foreshadows the Fall. Here, motherhood represents the wild and unknown territory, full of promises and threats. The unknown lies within the mother’s womb and in the discovery of her new role, between dislocation and transformation. It is a continent unto itself, hostile, magnificent. Thanks to @chateaudejau for showcasing the work of our artists Benoît Huot, Abel Burger, Simone Pellegrini, Emeli Theander, and Yasemin Senel until October 4. - #galeriedys #chateaudejau #emelitheander #contemporaryart #artexhibition @emeli_theander

SACRED FICTIONS 26–08–2026 Myths we live by Every belief begins as an invention. Long before doctrine, there is the impulse to imagine something larger than the self, a figure, a symbol, a story capable of holding what reason cannot explain. Sacred Fictions brings together artists who work at this threshold, where myth-making becomes a form of devotion and devotion, in turn, becomes a kind of fiction. Across sculpture, painting and image, the works gathered here do not illustrate existing mythologies so much as construct new ones. Some draw on inherited cosmologies, mystical systems, folk memory, or ancestral craft, reworking them into private iconographies. Others invent belief from nothing : characters, rituals, and symbols with no lineage beyond the artist’s own hand, yet charged with the same gravity as ancient scripture. What unites the artists in this exhibition is a shared conviction that fiction is not the opposite of the sacred but its origin. To tell a story with enough sincerity is to make it holy, if only for the duration of its telling. The presentation moves through these constructed mythologies as one might move through a temple built from doubt and wonder in equal measure, each spaces a different cosmos, each object a fragment of scripture written without a shrine. a-topos’, August 2026 __________________ Curation: @atopos.curator @houseofpenumbra Project management: @vasilysfrance VERNISSAGE: 26.08.26, 18:00-21:00 ↓ Espace Jouenne 41 Rue Montgrand 13006 Marseille Till 04.09.26 Visual design direction & AI-animation: @houseofpenumbra Original background oil painting „30. EMELI THEANDER Off-site summer show at Château de Jau June 19 - October 4, 2026 Emeli Theander (Sweden, 1984) is part of our upcoming off-site show at @chateaudejau this summer ☀️ Emeli creates works on canvas and paper imbued with an absolute duality. Each painting is an enigma: mirror effects, figures in strange poses, disjointed ballets of ghostly figures, settings of optical illusions, references to classical paintings that leave an impression of strange familiarity... The deceptive shadow becomes a bestial alter ego. The breastfed child seems to have cannibalistic urges. “I have created an imaginary vision of the unconscious, which resembles a botanical greenhouse. In these garden rooms I see figures and landscape being mirrored, reflected by the imaginary walls or in the water.” - Emeli Theander Emeli Theander’s practice is predicated on a central purpose, to imagine a vision of the unconscious. For her, this uncharted realm takes the form of a botanical wilderness filled with mirrors, water and light. The resultant paintings are timeless, resembling both scenes of 18th century pleasure gardens and scenarios from Greek mythology. Ends today 🔥 Mama Projects Voyageurs et Voyants Feat. Eng The human - or almost human - figure emerges in the paintings of both artists in a central and at the same time isolated way. If Benedetta Giampaoli (1997, Recanati, Italy) offers a composition full of references to decadence, vanitas, and human complexity, in the work of Emeli Theander (1984, Gothenburg, Sweden) the pictorial configuration is more dedicated to the expression of the unconscious, to revealing its hidden interstices, and what the surface often escapes, through a fantastic and fairy-tale aesthetic. At the edges of the main characters that rule the individual scenes appear elements that, although visually and stylistically distant from each other in the formal structures of the two artists, participate in a wider narrative, allowing the ensemble to be portrayed within a single frame. Some fabulous works from STUDIO WEST's online group exhibition SUNBURN. Featuring one work by a selection of over 20 emerging and newly established international artists, the exhibition seeks to incarnate the unique sensuousness of summer through paintings that transport the viewer to moments of blissful tranquillity when worries burnt away under the baking heat of holiday sun. For this exhibition, we took inspiration from Baz Lurhmann's song ‘Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)’ from 1998. Drawing its lyrics from a 1997 essay written by Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich, the song had the intention of passing the sage wisdom of one generation to the next, including exalting the importance of wearing sun cream. I will always remember the first time I heard this song, listening intently to what I knew was advice I needed as an insecure and naive adolescent. As a very fair skinned individual, taking the song's message seriously would have saved me a number of trips to Boots in search of Aftersun.  Here's a little something I wrote for the exhibition about sunburns, having had more than a few in my life:  "There is something unexpectedly precious about a sunburn. It is like a memory, an imprint of carefreeness left on the skin of one too wrapped up in joyous revelry to pay heed to the sun’s ferocious rays. While lathering aftersun onto patches of raw redness in front of a hotel mirror, one seldom regrets restorative hours spent bathing in crystal clear waters or inventive afternoons building world record worthy sandcastles. On returning home, a sunburn feels sacred, an ode to time spent away that lingers even after the feeling of peacefulness fades."
