Master Builders Victoria’s headquarters, originally built in 1967, has been retrofitted into a new Collaboration and Innovation Centre, bringing vocational training, member facilities and flexible workplaces together within the refurbished building.

The project retains the primary concrete frame, lift core and stairs, while opening the building up to daylight, fresh air, landscape and the street. New courtyards and a central void bring light deep into the plan, while a new accessible entry, café, seating and planting create a more welcoming public edge.

90 per cent of demolished building material was repaired, reused or recycled. Now all-electric and designed to adapt over time, the project is an exercise in using less, retaining more and investing where it matters.

Victoria’s planning reforms set out in the 2023 Victorian Housing Statement aim to fast-track housing delivery. While they support housing supply, they also risk sidelining gardens, tree canopy and local ecology across suburbs.

@naomi_barun argues that housing policy must reconnect homes to the landscapes that sustain them and recognise gardens as shared public infrastructure rather than private amenity.

The February issue of Landscape Architecture Australia is out now! Head to the link in bio to subscribe and pick up your copy.

Private gardens take up a sizeable quantity of space in our Australian cities, so this edition focuses on how their design can respond to broader issues, including climate change, the pressures of urbanisation and our housing challenges.

The collective impact that these many smaller, residential landscapes can have is threaded through all of the articles in this issue.

Join us for a new edition of PUMP UP THE VOLUME! Read the full newsletter via the link in bio.

This week, we close out summer on a bold and celebratory note. Let’s explore how urban landscape, designers and architects are pushing beyond conventional blueprints, bringing forward transformative ideas that reshape how we live, move, and imagine the built environment.

⚪Heavyweight of the Week: EXPLORE Emergent Studios @emergent_studios_design . The Melbourne-based Studio embraces what’s wild, incomplete, and uncontrollable. Their idea of ‘emergence’ lets landscape evolve after design.

Also exploring the design story of Queensbound’s borough in poem, TM Krishna @tmkrishnaofficial edicts sung into music, Sanjay Mohe’s @mindspacearchitects explanation on Indian architecture, and how recovering architect Jeremy Till @jeremytill proves that architecture is an insurgent place!

⚪ Lightweight of the Week: VISIT Draw Matter (@drawing.matter ). Explore the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice through their repository on architectural sketches that think louder than built projects.

⚪ What’s Happening: Let’s see what exhibitions, events, grants and others are around the corner!

PUMP UP THE VOLUME is a newsletter by VOLUME and @nieuweinstituut , edited by Stephan Petermann (@stephanpetermann ), Nishi Shah (@nishi.shah), Paola Tovar (@p.de.paola ) and Bansi Patel (@bansi_1921 ). Sign up via the link in bio to receive our bi-weekly newsletter in your inbox.
