Via Binarii (2019) is now part of the collection and permanent exhibition “Models from the Past for the Future” of @designmuseumgent.
Looking forward to discovering these seven teapots’ new home* this week!

“A line of makers stretching around the world from East to West. For Via Binarii, the teapot is the starting point. Drawing inspiration from the historic trade routes that delivered goods and knowledge from the exotic East, we trace the origins of the teapot, travelling from China to England, and continue this story in a contemporary age.”

Big thanks to @jkeep_artpottery @earlyamericanrobotpottery @rrael @vasfsf @emergingobjects @kammburger @the_mollylu @emrecanceramics @shlomitbauman @noamdover @itayohaly for collaborating with us on this project back in 2019 and your continuous inspiration!

Also a slightly sad moment: saying goodbye to ‘Artefacts of a New History’ and ‘Skafaldo Bowl’, who were Unfold’s ambassadors in the previous permanent exhibition and will now take a step back into the archives.

Opening Sep 25: explore the fascinating work of Rael San Fratello, where cutting-edge technology meets traditional building techniques.

A centerpiece of “Rael San Fratello: Prototypes and Provocations” is “Sanctuary,” a new large-scale commission 3D-printed onsite in our gallery using soil and water. The cylindrical structure offers a quiet space for reflection while demonstrating the studio’s innovative approach to ecologically-sound building.

“Sanctuary” expands on techniques developed in the 2019 project “Mud Frontiers.” Bringing together ancestral adobe construction techniques rooted in Puebloan and Indo-Hispano traditions with large-scale 3D printing, Rael San Fratello created structures from locally sourced sand, silt, clay, straw, and water—essentially printing architecture directly from the landscape.

These practices are being explored further with “Sanctuary.” Be among the first to see the completed work on opening night Fri. 9/25 from 6–9pm.

📖 💫 A decade of innovation - captured in one book.

From the first heart printed from stem cells to jet suits turning personal flight into reality... this is what #pushingboundaries looks like.

In this reel, we’re giving you a quick glimpse inside “Pushing Boundaries - Pioneers of Advanced Technologies” - a book that brings together 10 years of groundbreaking ideas from the global 3D
Pioneers Challenge.
🌟 It’s more than a retrospective:
It’s a look into how Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Technologies are transforming architecture, design, fashion, mobility, medicine, and beyond - and where they’re taking us next.

💡Created for everyone who wants to understand innovation - and be part of it.

Frontier Drive-In, developed by @rrael in collaboration with @muddyrobots, is an experimental installation exploring large-scale 3D printing with earth-based materials. The project operates as a research prototype investigating additive construction through locally sourced soil.

The process uses layered extrusion, where wet earth is deposited in continuous paths to build walls without formwork. Geometry and material calibration define structural stability, allowing the construction to emerge directly from digital input. The printed walls act simultaneously as enclosure and load-bearing elements, with their stratified texture recording the sequence of fabrication.

The project tests low-cost materials and robotic processes as an alternative to conventional construction, focusing on precision, material efficiency, and minimal waste.

The Smoke Screen is on display at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Carlo Ratti.

This very delicate and fragile 3D printed screen rising from the ashes is made of California wildfire ash and raises the questions: Can we rebuild using the ashes from the wildfires themselves? What artifacts can help us remember what we have lost? How can materials that are a product of destruction become materials for construction?

Phoenix Rising.

Many thanks to @labiennale and @crassociati for the invitation, and to @sjsu, @protopasta and @scotturiu for your support of this project.

It is an incredible honor to have been chosen by the @cooperhewitt as a 2025 National Design Award Winner in the category of digital design for my 16 year long endeavor with @emergingobjects inventing materials, hardware, software, and processes for #addittivemanufacturing / #3dprinting .

Emerging Objects has had an incredible group of collaborators over the years, many young talented employees coming from Berkeley, San Jose State University and other schools across the country. We thank them for their contributions to making the work possible.

2025 marked the 25th anniversary of the awards, which were established in 2000 as a project of the White House Millennium Council and bring national recognition to the ways in which design enriches everyday life.

The festivities included an awards ceremony, surprise performances by “Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial” participant Davóne Tines (@alsoanoperasinger), and music by @razorntape. But, most importantly, the evening honored this year’s winners and their exceptional contributions to design:

Ahead of the 2025 National Design Awards, we're shining the spotlight on this year's awardees. 🏆 Up next? Digital Design winner Emerging Objects (@emergingobjects)!

Ronald Rael (@rrael) and Virginia San Fratello (@vasfsf), founders of Emerging Objects, specialize in innovations in 3D printing architecture, products, software, hardware, and materials. They view themselves as digital alchemists, material scientists, and cooks, saying they see themselves “inventing recipes that allow us to ask questions about the future of the digital world through the lens of 3D printing.”

Tap the link in our bio to learn more about Rael, San Fratello, and their practice. #NationalDesignAwards
