I’ve been sitting with a camera roll full of incredible photos and videos from French Polynesia, trying to find the words to explain just how magical this trip was 🩵🌊🐋

I’m still not really sure I can…

I’m totally in awe of everything I experienced, and I came home feeling changed in the best possible way. I am definitely not the same person who stepped onto that plane just a few weeks ago

Between flying to the other side of the world by myself for the first time, having the MOST INSANE encounters with humpback whales, swimming with reef sharks and rays, meeting the best people, staying with a wonderful family, getting violently seasick and proving to myself that I can do hard things, discovering my hidden talent for whale spotting, laughing until my abs hurt, and eating my weight in Tim Tams and Shapes (IYKYK), I don’t even know where to begin

But there is one thing I keep coming back to…

I have never felt such a deep connection to the land and sea as I did in French Polynesia 🌺

There’s a concept called “mana” in Polynesian culture, which was described to me as this sacred, spiritual life force connecting all living things - from the mountains and land to the lagoons and ocean

It’s about our relationship with nature that goes beyond what we can see, and a sense of connection and responsibility to the world around us

And something about being there made me feel that connection in a way I never had before

I went into this trip hoping to experience incredible encounters with whales, but I came home with so much more than that 🩵

It reminded me why I feel so drawn to the ocean, why I care so deeply about conservation, and why I want to spend my life helping protect the places and wildlife that make this world so extraordinary

I’m still processing it all, but I know this experience will forever be a part of me

French Polynesia, you will always have a piece of my heart

These past few weeks have been overwhelming, with so many allegations of sex*al hara$$ment and abu$e emerging across our ocean and diving communities.

It’s normal to feel angry, upset, confused, and unsure what to do with all these emotions. And among all these questions, one keeps coming up: What can I actually do? Where do I start?

This post is a starting point. A few practical steps we can take within our own communities, the spaces we’re part of, and the reach we have right now.

We may not be able to change everything overnight, but we can each do something to help move things forward.

Been in fight or flight for a week straight, and now the anger I feel for myself, for other women, and for an industry that has failed to protect us. For the men who refuse to call each other out, for everyone staying silent, and continuing to follow, support, and enable men who may go on to prey on even more women who don’t yet know the warning signs.

I am angry. But beneath that anger is a refusal to accept that this is just how things are.

Stop protecting reputations over people. Stop looking away. Start holding each other accountable.

We all know there are so many guides and expedition leaders choose the right one!

We all have a responsibility to protect the women who come after us.

How can we protect our planet, our world, and our oceans if we can’t even protect each other? 🌊

And with that I am also filled with support and community so Thank you to all the women behind the scenes trying to make a lasting change, and to @karmaisaroundthekorner for getting everyone out there. Big thank you to the men I have been seeing speaking up! Thank you and hugs to you! 🫂

And ladies you are beyond brave, I’m right here 🩵🫂🌊

I hate that I have to make this post. But at the same time, as a womxn, and an instructor, a freediving school owner, we are in roles that need to speak up for those that cannot, are confused, are hurt, and feel they cannot.

Salty Souls, our staff as human beings, have been there. And we choose a side… that shouldn’t be controversial, but it is.

Here is a statistic that should be taken heavily, 1 in 3 women experience sexual assault and/or harassment.

We are creating this post in a way to address and open the conversation, not to point out any individual. We are making this post not to chase recent news or advances, but because this is a confusing conversation and we are using our platform to give guidance, hold space, and stand alongside anyone who has been in a situation like this.

While we have written some hotlines and tools available in both English and Spanish, if anyone needs to talk, we are here.

We love you and we believe you.
