The man, the legend, Dr. Harrington gave a masterclass in music and copyright today! Moderated by Vincent and having everyone locked in, the lunch talk should give everyone not in the audience some serious FOMO!

It’s been exactly one year since I attended my first Nashville songwriting retreat hosted by @andreastolpeofficial. I came to the retreat only months after graduating with departmental honors in music from @thenewschool. While I didn’t consider myself an experienced songwriter by any means, I possessed a burning passion to share my story and life through music. This retreat—which had me collaborate with songwriters I to this day consider WAY above my league and expertise—gave me the professional opportunity to quite literally jump headfirst into the deep end of the swimming pool and experience a taste of life working in the nation’s (and arguably the world’s) songwriting capital. Each afternoon, Andrea placed us into songwriting groups with just three hours to write a brand new song. Coming in as a solo songwriter, I was terrified. What if people don’t like my ideas? What if I can’t keep up? What if I dislike the collaborative process? These were all very real spiral-thoughts at the time… But as it turns out, I had nothing to worry about. We all emerged from the collaborations unscathed. I grew immensely as a songwriter, and—hey—we ended up with some pretty great songs, too! Andrea was incredibly supportive throughout the retreat, generous with her feedback, and dedicated time to mentor us on songwriting, networking, and the business. Andrea brings in a professional songwriter at each of her retreats. We got to learn from songwriter and record producer @gordonkennedymusic. You may recognize him as one of the songwriters behind the international hit song “Change the World,” recorded by Eric Clapton, which won Kennedy and his collaborators the Song of the Year award at the Grammy Awards in 1996. Before heading to the retreat, my father and I met up with some fellow songwriters at Honky Tonk Highway… which is essentially a neon-lit strip of downtown Nashville filled with multi-level music bars that blast country music out onto the streets 24/7, 365 days a year (for free!) It was definitely a wild time!! Of course, I had to network, too! During our stay at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel, my father and I met the lovely and talented @danielle_todd. She spoke t

I arrived early for Andrea Stolpe’s songwriting retreat so @blue_the_j and I took the opportunity to hang out with @emh2625 Dr. Harrington is an ethnomusicologist who’s served as an expert witness on many famous cases. His proudest accomplishment was helping to move the civil rights anthem, “We Shall Overcome” into the public domain. This is a wonderful picture of us at Radnor Lake.

When I was a student at Belmont University I majored in Religion and minored in Psychology with the intent to become a professor and spend my like in academia. My favorite class of all 4 years of my undergraduate years? History of Rock & Roll, taught by Dr. Harrington. I LOVED every minute of it. It was the only class I ever took from the man but I ended up in the world of music history didn’t I? This morning we got together - for the first time in 28 years - and talked about…what else? Rock & roll! Any teachers out there, just know that when you’re passionate you can impact your students for decades to come!
