Designer Christopher Dresser is fairly unknown here but the designer is invaluable as a pioneer of the Modern Movement. England is the country par excellence where industry moved full steam ahead in the 19th century. Dresser is the first to create specifically for and with the industry. His designs are unique and utopian. But the world is not yet ready for it. Only half a century later, Bauhaus and then Alberto Alessi, as a great supporter of Dresser, show many echoes of his futuristic models and his distinctive lines. At a retrospective exhibition in 2013 about Henry Van de Velde, the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels made a comparison with Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) and simultaneously displayed work by him. The renowned Victoria and Albert Museum devoted a major exhibition to this British designer in 2021. Nowadays, collectors are paying astronomical sums for prototypes that rarely reach the market. So it is not surprisingly that Carlo Bonte is auctioning off an extensive and varied collection of silver, ceramics and porcelain by the hand of Christopher Dresser. The auction on May 24 is in collaboration with silver expert Emil Fonfoneata, who organised in 2007 an exhibition around this designer in Ghent, Prague and Cologne. To prepare yourself, you can read the full article in our #mayissue.
