Edisi rumah tangga (domestic edition, which is my favourite version of me rn ngl) — had the joy of cooking for @merantau_stories. My offerings for the cookbook included a special occasion crowd favourite and a peculiar vegetable (very delicious for those with taste acquired). The team put the voice recorder on me and started interviewing as soon as they arrived. I should not always be trusted and have asked for some things I said to be redacted. Nevertheless, read it and eat it when the goods come out next year. Merantau Stories is a project by my friends @crispsredden @ntsy and @rubyhealey. Photographed by @emilraji.

◆Menu: Bubur Ayam (Jakartan style Chicken Rice Porridge) 🍲

◆Mama Ning is everyone's mama.. founder of community dance group Sanggar Lestari @lestarimelbourne 💃 Meeting Mama Ning and tasting her Bubur Ayam during one of Sanggar Lestari's rehearsal inspired the idea behind this book project.

◆ Imagine pre-colonial 1600s - late 1800s era when Makassans and Yolngu peoples of Northeast Arnhem land exchanged cultural practices. Ingredients such as rice, chilli and tamarind were introduced, imagine the dishes being made and the stories / connections built around food. Dances were exchanged 💃 — Yolngu performances today depict this intertwined Yolngu-Makassan history.

◆ Fast forward a few hundred years, here is Mama Ning, a Javanese-Ambonese person from Makassar, serving a rice porridge dish for community and teaching dance in a rehearsal space in Footscray (VIC) — continuing centuries old tradition of merantau, dance, cultural exchange and community-building through food in what is now known as 'Australia' and 'Indonesia' 🍲🤝
