#KevinRasmussen #AssociateMemberCSC @kevinthedp Most of my favourite films can be classified to some degree as “thrillers.” I absolutely love the challenge of creating tension with camerawork and lighting. The way Hitchcock, De Palma, and Kubrick shift between bold and restrained camera movement, with precision and intent to suck an audience into a story is amazing to behold. And Denis Villeneuve choosing to shoot a pivotal, tense confrontation between two main characters in a big wide shot, with storm clouds gathering on the horizon in Sicario is equally effective. I watched a ton of black and white noir films from the 40’s and 50’s, in highschool. My local library had loads of them, especially Anthony Mann and Fritz Lang films. I found them so visually striking, and thought they felt like the photographic equivalent of the comic books I obsessed over. I’ve shot a few thrillers and can’t wait for the next one to come along! I typically approach them all with the same philosophical approach, with varying degrees of the following: Mixing hard and soft light, carefully cutting hard light on the characters at the right moment, key-side back lights, silhouettes, tension in the framing, moving light, and the dramatic use of color for one or two scenes that really want to make a visual impact. Shout out to my pal @brucewilliamharper who operated and saved our bacon on 2nd unit, as well as Gaffer @catpatrichi who both joined me on two of these adventures! Directors of these 3 films: Cat Hostick @cathostick Farhad Mann Brent Cote @brentacote
