I moved my best-selling newsletter, The Department of Salad, to @the_department_of_salad. It's chaos here. šŸ“¬[email protected].

Thinking of @emilyreesnunn and @chandrasplate today. Also, don’t know who needs to hear this, but this is the appropriate amount of pickles for a tuna salad sandwich. #themoreyouknow #psa

So, yeah. This is where Pete’s been, lo these seven months: not taking his eyes off me.

In this period of time, I’ve learned so much: about bodies and health and how chronic stress and clinical depression can destroy T-cells. How Covid can attack a person but not the spouse they share a bed with. How 20-30% of all Covid tests have a false-negative result. How the medical community views women in their 50s. How the creative community views women in their 50s. How the creative community views chronically ill women in their 50s. What support is, and what it’s not. How friends can rally and come out of the woodwork. How friends can vaporize. How people you’d never expect to care do. How the ones you thought would don’t. How much a spinal tap really, really hurts. How shoving a long needle into someone’s back and asking them not to move is like the punchline to a bad joke. How much neuro-vertigo sucks. How much poetry helps. How much music helps. How much looking at my wife’s face helps. How the idea of death isn’t always so terrifying. How coming to terms with profound loss takes longer for some than for others. How intensely cruel family can be. How intensely cruel the medical world can be. How intensely kind it can be. How nurses are angels on earth. How you have to fight tooth and nail to get an answer; how you should. How some people don’t have the right words. How it’s not their fault. How nature heals. How children heal. How love heals. How water heals. How important it is to work. How important it is to keep writing, even when someone you trusted tells you you shouldn’t. How vital it is to give people permission to tell their stories. How vital it is to make sure they know it is their right. How vital it is to support your artists even when it’s easier not to. How important service is. How quickly days pass. How every one of us experiences a life change, a fork in the road, a dark night, a faltering of the body, nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita mi ritrovai per una selva oscura ché la diritta via era smarrita.
How slow and plodding healing can be.
How much good dogs love their humans.
How they are all good dogs.
What blessings look like.
