Echoes from Mindanao: Worship, Loss, and the Hope That Remains

On March 20, 2025, I arrived in Dipolog, on the island of Mindanao, Philippines. That very day, I joined the Hosanna Worship Team in a local recording studio, where we worked on two worship songs I had translated into Cebuano: Come, Jesus, Come and When We All Get to Heaven. It was an intense and exciting day, filled with passion and effort, though we quickly realized that even a full day wasn’t enough to achieve the level of excellence we were aiming for.

Jomar and Kevin poured their hearts into the project, and about a week later, I received the instrumental tracks with vocals. I’m not a musician myself, but I’ve always had a deep love for worship and for those gifted in music. When I listened to the recordings, they didn’t turn out quite as I had imagined. Still, I reached out to another professional for help, hoping the final mix could bring out the best in what we captured.

Just when I was ready to move forward, I received devastating news: the studio in the Philippines had been broken into, and the producer’s laptop — containing the entire project — was stolen. What we have now is all we’ll ever have. But even so, it carries the heart and spirit of the worship we shared.

On May 3, as I followed up on the music video, Kevin shared more tragic news. One of the videographers had been shot 26 times in the nearby city of Sindangan. A shocking and heartbreaking loss — one that reminds us just how fragile life is, and how deep the need for hope remains in places like Mindanao.

This project may not have turned out perfect, but it is precious. It carries the sound of our worship, the tears of our journey, and the hope that no darkness can ever silence.
