Singing our practice tracks in style! 🕶️

If you require transportation for 14 people, I highly recommend Paul at @rrrlimos in Maple Ridge! Tell them MRSS choir sent you!

It has been an incredibly memorable week thanks to @phoenixchamberchoir and @melodielangevin ! We were so honoured to be invited to participate in the Phoenix Choral Experience.

The PCX is a free educational outreach program for singers of all ages to work with and learn from Phoenix Chamber Choir, Artistic Director Dr. Nicholle Andrews, Education Representative Melodie Langevin, and this year’s invited guest conductor, Dr. Jace Kaholokula Saplan.

As a Kanaka Maoli advocate, artist, and culture bearer, Dr. Saplan is the Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music Learning & Teaching and Choral Conducting at Arizona State University and the artistic director of Nā Wai Chamber Choir, a vocal ensemble based in Hawai’i dedicated to the preservation, propagation, and innovation of Hawaiian choral music… among many other things!

Some highlights 🌈

• Renting a limo was actually cheaper than a bus… so we surprised the kids!

• It happened to be Elayne’s 18th birthday so we had a birthday party on the way to NSS.

• We met new friends! I am so proud of the MRSS kids for practicing kindness and inclusivity. They invited students from other schools into their conversations, making sure everyone felt seen and cared for.

• They started a little singing circle that kept getting bigger and bigger until all the kids were singing the songs and learning from one another! Music truly is a universal language.

• Working with Dr. Saplan. An absolutely gift to this world - thank you for being my millennial icon 👑

• I am so proud of how respectful and engaged my students were during the process of making, creating, and watching choral music; they were professional, reliable, and charismatic out in the world.

• I got to sing with my students!! As the conductor, I never get the opportunity to stand alongside my students and sing with them. At PCX, I had the chance to sing in the alto section with Emma J, Bianka, and Cheza. It was really special to share the stage with them in that capacity.

Thank you, Melodie, for inviting us! You are a gem!
