Lately, I’ve been thinking about how gratitude is probably hardest in the smallest moments, and maybe that’s exactly what makes it so worth practicing. It’s easy to be grateful when something big happens. When you get the job. When you finally take the trip. When you receive the good news or hit that milestone. Those moments almost force you to appreciate them. But the small things? A warm shower. A great song on the drive home. A good workout. Laughing with your friends. A quiet morning. The sky on your walk. Waking up and realizing you get another day? Those moments are so easy to overlook because they don’t feel extraordinary. But maybe that’s where gratitude matters most. Because most of our lives aren’t made up of huge, life-changing moments. They’re made up of thousands of little ones that we barely notice until they’re gone. I don’t want to spend my life waiting for something big to happen before I appreciate the life I already have. And I’ve wrestled with that lately. I’ve been too busy looking for the next BIG thing to come, only to realize that the BEST things are already in front of me. They’re here. Now. I am here (and you are here) now. That’s pretty darn cool. And as easy as it is to look past the little moments, I promise you, they are the most rewarding to sit down and say “thank you” about. Maybe gratitude is simply learning to notice how good the ordinary can be. All the love:)

This past weekend was one of the best of my lifetime. No exaggeration. Some of my favorite people all in one place, laughing and eating and rejoicing over a heck of a life. I am beyond lucky to be surrounded by these people. On top of hours in the sun, splashing in pools and lakes, my friends sat and supported me for just over an hour as I debuted my senior year documentary. We once again laughed, and also shed some tears. It was a magical moment, one that I’ll forever be grateful for. These people are much more than a simple passing face. They are closer to family than to a stranger, and I truly mean that. The hope is this event carries on for years, and we eventually tell our children of the summers their parents got together. Of the nights they talked endlessly, slept very little, and did it all again. Cheers to the memories we’ve shared so far, and all the ones that are to come. I’m thankful beyond belief. Love you all.

Dear Iowa…thank you. For giving me my purpose, my friends, my place. For giving me early morning exams and late night hangouts. For giving me challenges and roadblocks, pathways and opportunities. Thank you. Throughout my time here, I’ve changed in so many ways. But none more prominent than my mindset shift during my sophomore year. I started to post about positivity and gratitude for life. I made it a priority. With them, I started writing longer captions (and I still do…So sorry for that). I wanted to capture the moments of college in a positive light. I wanted to capture myself, and those around me, changing. Ironically, I ended up giving a commencement speech about capturing those exact moments. I’ve learned so much here, mainly outside the classroom. And I think that’s where we all learned the most. Through heartbreaks and happiness, through budget study meals and long days of adult beverages. We grew here. WE grew here. 20 pictures and videos are not enough to fully depict who I have become here. These 20 don’t tell the story of me at my lowest, or most stressed out, or when I was most lost. However…they do show the people who helped me in these moments. The people who dug, WITH ME, out of my hole, and hoisted me up and onto better paths. I love these people. And this place gave me a lot of them. As many of you know, I’m in the editing stages of a documentary that spans this final semester of college. In terms of my mindset for this? I’m terrified. And I’m excited. I’m nervous, I’m hopeful, I’m lost, and I am right where I need to be. I’ve realized throughout this filming process that it doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be worth capturing. To my friends and family, professors and passing people, this time was certainly worth capturing. And whatever way this documentary turns out, I’m so happy you all were part of it. YOU changed me. You did. And I can’t say thank you enough. This place will always be home when I need it. But for now, I’m moving on. I was debating a sad song for this post, but that wouldn’t be right. This is a rejoice. A triumphant moment. So sing along, and thank you again. I love each and every one of you.
