🤔 What does it mean to be emancipated? How does it change, after dying several deaths to navigate a new reality?
🇯🇲These are the questions I’m reflecting on today, August 1, as Jamaica celebrates its 131st year of emancipation. This day would also have been my cousin’s 15th birthday, had he lived past the age of 2.

👼🏾I chose this day 6 years ago as the publishing date of my first book for those two reasons. To honour Baby Chris and simultaneously celebrate my country and my own decision to emancipate myself from all the traumas I experienced from my childhood until age 30.
Hard Gal Fi Dead: Musings, Poems, Notes to self represents all that.

Today, having experienced so much more of life from the perspective I have now, I am more grateful. Even as I work to emancipate myself from the throes of grief and all it encompasses.

To everyone who has ever read it, I thank you. For all the people around the world who reached out to tell me how it opened them up, healed them, and made them laugh or cry, thank you. From the people who still share it online and those who tell others to buy it…. To everyone who calls it their favourite book and asks “when is the next one,” thank you.
It changed my life, too.
