Princess Mary, The Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood | A Royal Life Defined by Service

Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, occupied a unique position within the Royal Family. Born into an era of immense change, she witnessed the final years of the Victorian world, two World Wars, and the transformation of the monarchy in the twentieth century.

Princess Mary devoted much of her life to practical service. She supported nursing, welfare organisations, and causes connected with women, children, and the armed forces. She became closely associated with the Girl Guides, later serving as President of the organisation for many years.

Her marriage to Viscount Lascelles in 1922 brought her to Goldsborough Hall and then Harewood House, where she became deeply connected with Yorkshire life. Remembered for her love of horses, racing, and country pursuits, Princess Mary combined the traditions of her royal upbringing with a genuine commitment to the communities she served.

You can read more about her fascinating life in Princess Mary The First Modern Princess by Elisabeth Basford.
