“Nobody needs flowers at the end of the world”

A huge earthquake hits Portland, and nine-months-pregnant Annie is at IKEA. She goes from searching for a crib to crossing the city on foot to try to reunite with her husband.

The devastating phenomenon that everyone’s been warning about for years has finally happened. So why is no one prepared? As Annie walks through the aftermath of the anticipated Cascadia megaquake, there’s no cell service or help, so she takes one step after another, talking to her baby about how they ended up here.

A dreamer-turned-pragmatist, she’s talking about her relationship with her dreamer-want-to-be-provider husband. She’s talking about losing her mom, her childhood, and her own expectations of motherhood. The first few chapters slowly hooked me, alternating between the present day and memories. Then I couldn’t stop reading. Love a book that keeps you up all night!

The last few chapters end on such great cliffhangers that I worried there wouldn’t be more. A perfect binge read and a great book to read between decades of life, when you look at every aspect of your life with both a new perspective and nostalgia.

Thank you for the amazing rec @emmajudgelit

En écrivant j’ai lu… La déroute d’Emma Patte, or Tilt, for the original title. For who ever got the chance to spend a few years on the Pacific Northwest coast, you know what to do if the big one strike. At least you think you know. That is such a powerful and wild novel to read, with the iron taste of the blood in your mouth, your skin burning, witnessing the civilization collapsing and having this urging life instinct in your womb. Haletant et plein de souvenirs en même temps. @emmapattee #bigone #pnw #pacificnorthwest #portland

THIS SATURDAY! 5 PM! FREE!

EMMA PATTEE reading from
TILT: A NOVEL

-Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal of Excellence in Fiction
-A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice
-A USA TODAY Bestseller
-A Best Book of 2025 for Vogue
-Named one of Time’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2025
-An NPR favorite fiction read of 2025

Set over the course of a single day, an electrifying debut novel from “a powerful new literary voice” (Vogue) following one woman’s journey across a transformed city, carrying the weight of her past and a fervent hope for the future.

“Utterly gripping.” —NPR, All Things Considered

Last night, you and I were safe. Last night, in another universe, your father and I stood fighting in the kitchen.

Annie is nine months pregnant and shopping for a crib at IKEA when a massive earthquake hits Portland, Oregon. With no way to reach her husband, no phone or money, and a city left in chaos, there’s nothing to do but walk.

Making her way across the wreckage of Portland, Annie experiences human desperation and kindness: strangers offering help, a riot at a grocery store, and an unlikely friendship with a young mother. As she walks, Annie reflects on her struggling marriage, her disappointing career, and her anxiety about having a baby. If she can just make it home, she’s determined to change her life.

“Shocking and full of heart” (Publishers Weekly, starred review), Tilt is a “moving adrenaline rush” (The New York Times Book Review) and “epic odyssey” (NPR) about the disappointments and desires we all carry, and what each of us will do for the people we love.
