So beyond blessed to be a Hawkeye!🖤💛
This past weekend I got the opportunity to take my official visit to The University of Iowa as a verbally committed recruit! I got to meet the whole team and my roommate Ireland! God could not have put me in a better group of people! The whole experience makes me so excited for next fall! A big thank you to Coach Robinson and the athletes for hosting us, along with all the other athletic and university staff for everything they did and provided! I thank God for the opportunities and people he has provided and the opportunity to compete and do what I love at my dream school with a full ride! Go Hawks!!

🏆 ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Emma Severson | TRACK & FIELD

For Emma, throwing started with family—and has grown into something much bigger.

“My dad originally got me started in throwing; he’s been a coach my whole life.”

That early start has turned into a standout athletic career, highlighted by a state championship in both shot put and discus this past season.

Q: What’s been your biggest accomplishment so far?
A: “Biggest accomplishment so far is winning state in both shot and disc this past season.”

But getting to that point wasn’t only about physical preparation. For Emma, one of the biggest challenges has been learning how to handle the mental side of competition.

“I had to work on overcoming the mental side of competing. Over time, just being in high pressure situations helps, as well as keeping the Lord the center of my competing.”

And behind every athlete is a team of people who help make the journey possible. For Severson, that list is too long to narrow down to one.

“I have so many supporters I can’t just choose one. Of course my Dad (coach) and mom, as well as my little brother, grandparents, close friends, and so many more.”

One moment, however, stands out.

“Standing in the podium and seeing Roger Herring Stadium packed to the brim. Thousands of people, and yet I still heard my teammates cheering for me, and my grandparents and parents so proud.”

Through all of the training, competition, victories and setbacks, one thing continues to remain at the center.

“I have learned that I need to keep God the reason for everything I do. Through training, competing, good performances and bad. As well as everyday life.”

Emma also gives a special shoutout to Fox Valley Throws Club, which they have been a part of since 6th grade.

From getting started with a coach for a dad to standing atop the state podium, the journey is about much more than medals. It’s about the people, the work, the pressure, the moments—and the purpose behind it all.

This is Emma’s story.
