The only words I’ve heard from every position, dept, budget, scale, local… “movies are miracles” SLAY is absolutely a miracle! Premiering tonight in Hollywood! Over the 2023 holidays Kyra Gardner mentioned a feature in the works… we had made music videos together; I helped wrangle a Foo Fighter or two so she could get an interview. We moved background around… sure why not, let’s do it. SLAY was a huge jump up for her and I’m so proud to have been with her along the way. It has not been easy. Kyra is a force and without her this movie would not exist. I can’t wait to get this one out in the world! So, flash back to March 27, 2024. We touched down in Butler, OH. On the first night together after a long day of travel and scouting, and the dreaded epiphany that this shoot would likely require a month of overnights, our DP Evan Butka appeared from the shadows with a refrigerator drawer filled with pizza. I knew it would be a great team. We were going to make it through. Even with a great team shooting the movie there was a lot of turmoil and loss. No friend, coworker, mentor, or film school professor can prepare you - all you can do is listen. I’m so appreciative of those that trusted me to run the set and keep us on schedule - and let me dip my toes in the producing of it all - but above all to be someone to hear from all sides and figure it out.
