POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I've been playing music longer than I've been making photographs and films. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of original music fragments and vignettes going back to the late 90s and early 2000s sitting on my hard drive, a lot of them still in my brain, never recorded. A couple dozen became full tracks across multiple demo tapes in the early 2000s. The rest, well, they're sitting there gathering "dust." They are, to get woo-woo about it, devoid of light.

I've never been good at learning existing music. When I did, I played them "wrong," or they morphed into something weirder, with only a hint of the original peeking through. I didn't care because writing and playing my original work is all I was ever good at.

Everything I learned to do as a photographer and filmmaker, I forgot to teach my musician side. The first being to not give a fuck what others think about what comes out of my head. The second, to get to doing my best and put the work out there. Deadlines, man, they don't allow you to stew in a pot of "thinking." Ironically, how I went about building my photography and filmmaking paths was inspired by how I did the same when I was playing music.

Music exists to connect us when language fails. It's not a sport. Not a certificate. Not a club.

I've spent years stewing over whether those half-gestated ideas I gathered would be worth building into full albums. "Is what I made any good?" should be asked to push ourselves, not used as an excuse to quit. I know I'll never quit making music, and stewing never did me any good.

If my artist life is a table, then music is the only leg missing in the company of filmmaking, photography, and writing. It's a lot more than just holding the table up.

So, I'll just put out whatever the fuck I feel like going forward. Sounds from a guitar, a ukulele, a keyboard, bass, piano, empty pots and pans, field recordings, the beat emanating from the escalator at the West 4th Street stop, mashes of things cooked up inside Ableton and Logic, they're all going to make their way out to the world. They'll exist in parts or as a whole.

Will they be any good? They'll be good enough, but the table will be one sturdy mthrfckr.

After Mother’s Day family lunch in Queens, we got off at Delancey Street and I said bye and slipped into ICP’s fifth Photobook Fest, in my neighborhood- a gathering which had taken over the building and was still packed near closing. ICP - International Center of Photography

I mainly wanted to say hello to my dear friend Emon Hassan, who came all the way down from Washington Heights with his Handsome Crow table. Emon is a New York photographer and filmmaker, a longtime contributor to The New York Times, and now the maker of emonome, his beautifully odd, print-only photography zine. I bought an issue, gave him some Lower East Side hospitality, and then made a quick dash through two floors of photobook heaven.

I first met him when we were paired on a Narratively project together. I did an article about my dad and Emon did the photographs. They’re amazing.

I had never even heard of the festival until Emon mentioned it, but now I’m filing it under: go next year.

Fun on the Lower East Side this weekend’s ICP - International Center of Photography @icp three day photo book fest.

My friend Emon Hassan a Times photographer who I first met when he did amazing photos of my dad for @narratively has his photo books in this. I’ll drop by at some point!

Always proud of him! My dad would be too. That was an odd wonderful couple! Go, Emon! Xx @emonhassan

In 2005 I switched from Windows to Mac, and one of the first things I did was open GarageBand. Until then I’d only composed on acoustic or electric guitar — never touched samples or recorded music on a DAW. My experience was limited to using SawPro on a windows machine to edit radio plays.

So I made a series of pieces using nothing but GarageBand loops, uploaded them to a secret MySpace account under the name Status Factor.

Then MySpace lost everything. Of the five pieces I made, two survived. “Rise” is one of them. The other is “Hero.”

p.s. my backup game today is solid.
