📖🌟 As Open Access Week comes to an end, we’re proud to highlight “Jim Crow in the Asylum” (@uncpress) by Kylie Smith (@drkknits). Thanks to support from Digital Publishing in the Humanities and the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship @emory_ecds, “Jim Crow in the Asylum” is available to read for free as an enhanced digital edition. Enriched by ArcGIS StoryMaps and interactive data visualizations in Tableau, the enhanced digital edition brings to life Dr. Smith’s extensive research on the complicated history of psychiatric health care and segregation in the American South. *** “Smith’s book is an excellent example of how to listen through archival silences in order to present an account of one of the most marginalized groups in the United States during the twentieth century.”—Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences “... ‘Jim Crow in the Asylum’ persuasively illustrates that anti-Black racism is not an incidental bias but a foundational element of US psychiatric history. It is an important contribution to the history of medicine and disability studies.”—CHOICE Discover the enhanced digital edition now – link in bio 🔗

📚🌍 Knowledge should be accessible to all! Happy International Open Access Week! 🎉 This year’s theme, “The Cost of Knowledge,” invites us to reflect on the financial, environmental, and human costs of creating and sharing knowledge—and who gets to access it. At Emory University, we’re proud to support open access through a variety of initiatives, including: 🌐 OpenEmory – Making over 36,600 scholarly works by Emory researchers freely accessible worldwide. 📖 Digital Publishing in the Humanities (DPH) – Celebrating 10 years of open access publishing, with 40 books reaching readers in 194 countries! 💻 Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS) – We advance open access through innovative digital publishing platforms, scholarly journals, and collaborative digital scholarship. And these are just a few of the many ways Emory is working to make scholarship more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable! 🔗 Discover more about Emory’s open access initiatives in our latest blog post: https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/ecds/ (Link in bio!) #oaweek #openaccessweek #openaccess #publicscholarship #emoryuniversity

Happy International Open Access Week! Today, we’re highlighting a new release: “Cosmopolitan Crete” (@bloomsburypublishing) by @georgiastateuniversity Prof. Louis A. Ruprecht Jr. Thanks to support from our Digital Publishing in the Humanities program, “Cosmopolitan Crete” is now available to read and download for free! On the importance of publishing his work open access, Prof. Ruprecht. shared: “In my new book, Cosmopolitan Crete, I am interested in exploring the idea that this storied Mediterranean island was known by the ancient Greeks as a primordial place of mixing: arts and cultures, ethnic groups, languages, religions, and more. The island’s position in the center of the eastern Mediterranean made it an inevitable crossroads and point of contact. I am deeply indebted to Emory University and the FCHI for supporting the grant that enabled this book to be available in an open access format, thereby facilitating the very kinds of exchange the book is interested in promoting.” Learn more and read the book (for free) now – link in bio!

Has this ever happened to you? Emory Libraries offers access to lots of paid resources, but after graduation, many students are left without the resources they enjoyed while in school. Open access materials are mant to bridge that gap. They come in many different forms, from journal articles, to textbooks, and even books for leisure reading. From October 19-25, 2026, International Open Access Week is meant to promote open access resources and challenge the traditional paid publishing model. Stay tuned to our social media for information on events and more details on open access.

🏺 Happy International Archaeology Day! Today, we’re celebrating archaeology at ECDS by revisiting Samothrace, a long-running digital humanities collaboration that brings the ancient Sanctuary of the Great Gods to life through mapping, 3D modeling, aerial photography, and immersive technologies. For nearly two decades, ECDS geographer Michael Page has worked alongside Dr. Bonna D. Wescoat and the American Excavations Samothrace team to document and visualize this remarkable archaeological site on the Greek island of Samothrace. From early survey measurements and 3D reconstructions to VR walkthroughs and a new full-resolution visualization being developed in Unreal Engine, the project shows how digital scholarship can help us explore, preserve, and reimagine the past. 🔎 Celebrate #InternationalArchaeologyDay with us and discover the story—and latest developments—behind the Samothrace project. 🔗 Read the full blog post here or at the link in bio: https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/ecds/ #archaeologist #archaelogy #digitalhumanities
