The breeze of Lyall Bay carries more than the sea spray of one of Wellington’s favourite beaches – it’s also alive with the quiet yet confident aura of a truly creative community 🎨💐🪡

This pocket of the capital’s south coast has become a gathering place for makers in every sense of the word: artists, distillers, chocolatiers, florists, designers, and more, many of them finding a home in the classy Lyall Bay Junction.

Visit our link in bio to meet just some of the wonderful makers in this pocket of Wellington 🔗

There’s something very special about walking into Empire of Genius. This is slow fashion at its best — thoughtful and made to be worn for years.

Designer Tymone has been sewing since she was young — taught by her mother, who also sold clothing with her when she was a girl. She later went on to study fashion design, but sewing and creating had been part of her life from the start.

Over time, Tymone became especially drawn to leather — and the combination of silk and leather, especially perforated leather, has become one of her signatures. In her shop, you’ll find beautiful pieces that feel both modern and timeless.

The silk Tymone uses has its own story too. She works with vintage saris sourced from India, each one washed and carefully selected. Every sari is around five yards long — enough for a dress and perhaps two tops — which means every piece made from it is genuinely limited.

As she says, her clothes are for women who know who they are — women with a strong sense of self, who want what they wear to reflect something of their inner world. Each season brings a new collection, designed by Tymone herself, and from time to time she also turns her hand to bags and accessories.

It’s a rare thing to find a shop like this: distinctive and deeply personal. A beautiful, distinctive space — and one of Lyall Bay’s best-kept secrets 🩵

Happy International Women’s Day 💛

Today we’re celebrating some of the incredible women behind businesses in KRL. They take risks, employ local people, support their families and help keep our community going.

These are just a few — we know there are many more amazing women in business across Kilbirnie, Rongotai and Lyall Bay.

Tag your favourite women-owned business in KRL!

Two kiwi designers I love - bag @madebyv.nz and silk skirt & cap @empireofgenius

If you are shopping this black Friday both these designers are slow fashion and high quality 💕

I’ve been meaning to pop into @empireofgenius since I’ve been hanging in #LyallBay and see if I could catch the owner and creative force behind this Kiwi fashion label @tymonewinter who I went to high school with.
Today I finally did - and we ended up having the loveliest cuppa and catch-up.
I’m always inspired by people who back themselves and follow their dreams - especially in the creative industries, where the path is rarely easy or straightforward. She has a sale on atm - 40% off on some items. Pop in or have a browse online ➡️ https://empireofgenius.co.nz🛍️

flyng studios x empire of genius

collaborated between material experimentation and artistic fashion design development. a unique piece of kleather, grown by bacteria. a unique piece of weareable art.

Tymone Winter's artistry showcases a pleated microbial leather bag, paired with leather from her own workshop. designed to be modular, and separable, making elements easily reusable, and in the case of the k-leather, biodegradable.
