We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask! -Paul Laurence Dunbar

Emerging Choreographers Show at La MaMa Moves Festival 2024

Produced by the @mauranguyendonohue

Red and Blue become puppeteers of the infant; their arms are the puppeting rods and strings of the infant. White walks alongside Red, in view, but in the background nevertheless. The Buzzard circles them, culling at the infant, never quite reaching it. After 4 times of circling Red, White, and Blue, plus the animated-inanimate object (the melanated infant puppet), Blue picks up the doll by the leg and drops it in the arms of the Buzzard. The Buzzard capriciously bounces across the stage, seemingly happy to have the object of its desire.
Red, White, and Blue dance a brisk trio with prevailing motifs of
Slicing
Diving
Swirling
Framing
Gathering
The trio resolves with Red and Blue being magnetically pulled towards each other, leaving white huddled downstage left.

There is a whispered rebuke of political dance. As if it is lesser or dirty work; work that is less refined and done only for shock value. This is because the theatre is fictively thought of as a place for escape from the real world into the whimsical. I offer this in response: All dance is done for a reason—with a purpose. Whether that purpose be for conjuring forth the metaphysical, healing the body, for pure enjoyment or for entertainment. The multiplicity of dance is not mutually exclusive and is often not fixed. Dance done purely for applause and entertainment is and always will be valid. However the notion that socio-political dance as performance art requires less physical rigor is a reductive means by which purely physical practitioners (often company/studio dancers) attempt to disqualify academic approaches to the field. Dance is an apparatus. A tool. Dance making is theory making; wherein a theory is a metaphor created to understand the world around us more deeply. When we attempt to disqualify the theoretical, often dance based performance art, we deepen the chasm of misunderstanding which is often at the root of hate.

“a n t a r e s” meaning “anti - ares”/ “opposite mars(god of violence)”is a work in progress that I have been using to understand my rage and grief with our world. The puppet in the work represents lifeless childhood and stolen innocence. Is the work dark? Yes. But so is the reality of the world we continue to awaken to. In the words of Nina Simone, “it is an artist’s duty to reflect the times.”

Night Skies

This semester, I had the opportunity to choreograph for the Hunter Dance Fall 2023 ChoreoLab. Night Skies is my first work and I am so grateful to my dancers for their hard work and dedication to making my vision come to life. Without them, this piece would not have grown into something so meaningful to me. Thank you @emmardegroff @nae2gorg @liv_18_ @liv_gennardo @empresspeebles I love you all 🫶🫶🫶
