How do you feel about your phone? 🤳

This year at @itpcamp I taught a new workshop: Objects Against Screen Time. 🪨

Companies are profiting off of our guilt around screen time. You have probably seen ads for Brick, a handy device that you can use to limit your phone usage. In this workshop we made our own objects to aid in achieving goals regarding screen time, for way less than the Brick’s $60 price tag.

We started with a few questions:
🌷 Think back to when you got your first phone. How did it feel?
🌷 Look at your phone now. What does it make you feel?
🌷 What, if anything, are you doing to limit your phone usage?
🌷 What is your goal?
🌷 What type of object would help you achieve this goal?

For some, their phone is an evil object that controls them. For others, it feels like an extension of themselves. Whatever that relationship may be, we used those feelings to create new objects.

AJ made a hat for her phone so it doesn’t light up when she gets a notification. Cameron stuck an NFC tag to a playing card that he’ll use to limit certain app usage (connected to the free app Foqos). Molly made a scary monster out of cardboard to keep her phone away. Neel made a phone holder he’ll hang on the wall to leave his phone in when he gets home. I made a bed for my phone to rest in (inspired by @margaretgstewart ‘s phone hotel at her home!)

I shared some of these objects at the ITP Camp Show All Things Show and asked people to mark where their relationship with their phone lies. For pretty much everyone, it was somewhere between an evil object, extension of themself, and a helpful tool.

There’s no one perfect solution. But my hope is that by making these objects, we feel we regain some control over these objects that can easily feel like they govern so much of our lives.

I really enjoyed running this workshop and have many ideas for doing it again!

Evidence of performance part 1. Thank you so much @wahdeline @reckonermusic @archaic.tech @voydescreamsback @emptyflash_ and everyone who attended! Thank you @erinwajufos for photos 2, 4 & 6. It was incredible being in a room with so many talented people who come from all walks of life but are still so aligned when it comes to what matters most. I hope there any many more nights like this in all our futures.

Also! For those who missed the show, each of the sets are now up on youtube :)
