🧡 Day 5 of LLLDAM - celebrating INNOVATION, ACCESSIBILITY, and COMMUNITY‑MADE SOLUTIONS.

Did you know that some assistive devices can be 3D‑printed using open‑source files and a standard 3D printer?

🦾 One of our local families recently created a 3D‑printed arm through their library’s makerspace - and it’s been incredible watching their daughter explore what’s possible with it.

We’ve also had our own 3D‑printing adventure!
The amazing team at the Illinois Assistive Technology Program @illinois_assistive_technology created a custom arm for Mackenzie - she picked the colors herself… and yes, she asked if it could shoot glitter.
And yes… they absolutely made that happen.

What we love about 3D‑printed devices:
✅️ They’re customizable
✅️ They’re low‑cost or free if you have access to a printer
✅️ They’re a great way to introduce prosthetics to young kids
✅️ They make the process fun, not intimidating

And in our experience?
They’re more Fun than Function - they may not grip like a traditional prosthetic and parts can loosen over time - but the confidence, curiosity, and joy they spark is priceless.

Mackenzie now brings hers to school sometimes, and her friends LOVE seeing it.
Representation through PLAY is powerful.

We also want to highlight groups like e‑NABLE, a global volunteer network that partners with local high schools, colleges, libraries, and makerspaces to 3D‑print assistive tools for people who need them.

Vincent Coleman, a senior in our Robotics and Engineering class and a student at @rockwoodschooldistrict - Summit High, is using his skills to make a real difference.

Through a global nonprofit called @enablethefuture, Coleman is leading a project to design and build 3D-printed prosthetic hands for people in need. He’s already earned five design badges and is applying to become an official chapter so he can start delivering finished prosthetics to families around the world.

Meet Kyle 💙 He’s 11 and from the Philippines. He lost his arm in an electrocution accident, and his best friend actually reached out through the @enablethefuture network looking for a prosthetic.

This was my first real case ever, I 3D printed him a Kinetic arm by Matt Bowtell of @free3dhands and when I got the pictures and videos back, especially the one of him dancing, I honestly can’t explain how happy it made me. 🥹 It was priceless.
