The Enamelist Society (@theenamelistsociety ) and Enamel Guild Northeast (@enamelguildnortheast ) present Gardens in Glass, an exhibition showcasing the beauty and language of flowers as expressed in enameled jewelry. Together, the two organizations have invited 30 enamel artists who work with flowers and other botanicals — some rendering forms and surfaces with striking realism, others leaning abstract, but all exploring flora through brilliant or subtle color and geometric or sensual organic shapes.

The day opens with a lecture by master enamelist Jamie Bennett at 3:30 PM, followed by an opening reception from 6:30–8:30 PM.

The Enamelist Society is a volunteer, nonprofit arts organization founded to promote the art of enameling through workshops, conferences, exhibitions, and grants.

Enamel Guild Northeast is a professional organization dedicated to the same craft across the northeast U.S., through exhibitions, workshops, and education.

Our friends at the Enamel Guild Northeast are hositing their 34th Annual Conference on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at The Newark Museum of Art, in Newark, NJ. Pre-conference workshops will be held at the same location.

This year will have presentations by Judy Stone and Jan Harrell. Presentations will be followed by demonstrations and the end the conference with a raffle and the annual buy, sell &; trade hour.

Judy Stone and Jan Harrell will both will teach 2-day workshops Thursday, April 30 – Friday, May 1, 2026.

JAN HARRELL: THE PRINTED SURFACE IN ENAMEL
TIME IS RUNNING OUT to register for this enamel workshop with the AMAZING Jan Harrell.
Jan is an award winning artist, an incredible instructor and a beautiful person. She has taught at the Glassell School of Art for 35 years and has work in many prestigious collections. She will be here to show you how to achieve wonderful imagery and patterns in your work. You will learn how create depth by building layers and repeating patterns.

Each participant will create one 5½” x 4” (110 DPI) screen and work with ready-to-use imagery on transparency film, allowing maximum time for hands-on experimentation.
Jan will show the many ways to use the screens on flat and curved surfaces. You will learn to make your own screens using photosensitive film and a simple homemade light box, then explore how to wrap imagery around forms, build layered stencils, incorporate text and graphics, print on flat metal, and create decals for dimensional work using grain enamel. This technique works on pieces of all sizes from wall panels to small jewelry.

“Across disciplines, artists have long incorporated multiple sources into their work, using a variety of techniques. In this workshop, free yourself from the limited vocabulary of commercially-prepared screens and add layered meaning to your enamel work. In this fast paced 2-day workshop, we will construct an inexpensive light box and then make personally created screens. Then the fun begins!.”

Magnolia,
Sweet perfume…Floating

Creating “Magnolia” #2676, a portrait of a wonder-full blossom, let me play in new ways; the blossom itself (like “Lily”)
1. The shape cut to the flower’s outline
2. Used blue beneath the whites for cool shadows and,
3. Is set as a separate panel above the leaves, as would be in nature. I wanted the blossom to feel light and suspended, giving the sense of flower and branch dancing in a perfumed breeze.

The pendant is formed from two panels of enamel, layered with gold and silver foils to catch and reflect light differently as it moves. Using layers of opaque, transparent and opalescent enamel glass the image has actual depth. Each panel is bezel in 24kt gold soldered to Argentium silver, fabricated and engraved with number, title, signature, poem and metals. A double strand of fine cultured freshwater pearls, 20k gold, emerald, and sapphire completes the piece, chosen for their softness, color, and balance.

I’m so moved to have Pearl Mist Dancer back in my hands. Her photograph just couldn’t capture how her colors shift in the light, bringing her to life.

This dragonfly is one of those pieces that stayed close to my heart from the moment I made her in 2000. Her wings were created with layer after delicate fired layer of luminous enamels, so that she shimmers in motion. Her eyes are natural pink diamond crystals, her nose natural green diamond. Her body is of Tahitian and freshwater pearls, set in 24k & 14 k gold.

I’m glad to be able to share her again. Now I need to design a new necklace for her. Each choice (there are many!) changes her personality…
for that reason they are easily interchangeable from one strand to another. Pearl Mist Dancer, reborn*
