ITS THE CAPTION NOT THE PHOTO
Not many people will understand why I miss my audio engineering days…
“Put the Neumann away. give them an SM57.” People who haven’t tracked singers think expensive mics are always better. Then you get that one vocalist with a razor blade at 3 kHz and an inconsistent 8-inch head bob, and suddenly that U87 becomes your enemy.
“Hand me the 57.”
“Seriously?”
“Trust me.”
We were an electrician, a pirate, a computer scientist, and a composer all at once.
People today can make phenomenal records, but a lot of the engineering has become abstracted.
Back then you actually understood the signal chain because you had to.
Mic output.
Preamp input impedance.
Balanced line.
Patchbay.
Insert send.
1176.
Converter.
PCI cards.
DSP farms.
SCSI drives.
You knew why the session wouldn’t open because you’d spent the last hour troubleshooting IRQ conflicts.
And everyone was chasing the question:
How do we keep the soul of analog while getting the precision of digital?
Analog did things we couldn’t yet model.
Tape compression.
Transformer hysteresis.
Tube saturation.
Console summing.
Inter-channel crosstalk.
Those weren’t plugins.
They were physics.
Nowadays, if you instantiate an emulation of a vintage preamp, it gets you remarkably close. But back then, you were hearing the hardware itself, with all of its quirks and tolerances. The Rubidium clock debates.
“The stereo field is wider.”
“How?”
“It just is.”
“Explain it.”
“I can’t...”
“But listen!”
The studio became a laboratory where everyone was chasing the last one or two percent.
What I miss most…
The silence after a take.
The room.
The musician looking through the glass.
The engineer reaching over...
Click
Playback.
Nobody says a word for thirty seconds.
Then someone quietly says,
“I think that’s the one.”
There was reverence in those ceremonies
Its akin to the old Japanese concept of shokunin, the deep devotion to a craft. Audio engineering was learning the behavior of transformers, converters, acoustics, performers, and software until they all became one instrument. That’s a rare kind of education, and I suspect it still shapes the way I approach life to this day.

Happy clock in Friday (Part 1) gym fam! Some days you feel strong, some days you feel tired. Some days you don’t feel like showing up, but show up anyway.

Since my guy @juicemane8389 left his post 🤣🤣 I stepped in as the unofficial Nekter Crofton spokesperson and got a bunch of people (including myself, my daughter and some of the staff) to drink those shots. The ginger was strong but I’m stronger. 😆 Swipe to see the reactions.
