How To Inherit a History of Solidarity? is the second chapter of Choosing the Sad End, a four-chapter artistic research project that critically interrogates national liberation and transnational solidarity and asks: How did the left's political and cultural-artistic project shift from an internationalist liberation project to just symbolic gestures within a globalized political economy of solidarity?

Through dialogues in four different cities — Amman, Nicosia, Beirut, and Tunis — the project seeks to inspire a political imagination in the current moment, by engaging with archival and historical networks, various publications, knowledge production, artworks, and films. These materials engage with national liberation, decolonization movements, and transnational solidarity in the Global South. In each city, the project collaborates with a co-curator and partner art space around its core questions.

In the Nicosia chapter, we focus on the archive of Palestinian and independent publications produced in Cyprus between the 1980s and 1990s, including Al-Karmal, Palestinian Studies, Palestinian Revolution, and other periodicals. The publications spanned a wide range of formats and themes — social studies, theoretical reflections, literary production, and journalistic periodicals. Printed in Cyprus through what we call an infrastructure of solidarity, they were then distributed across Arabic-speaking countries. This work was carried out alongside major literary figures such as Mahmoud Darwish and Salim Barakat.

How To Inherit a History of Solidarity? takes this history as a starting point to rethink and practice solidarity in today's moment of genocide in Gaza, militarization, financialization, and the rise of populism and fascism. The geographies gathered in this chapter may seem distant and disparate, yet they are entangled in a long shared history of colonialism. As the abolitionist thinker Ruth Wilson Gilmore reminds us, geographies of abolition — that is, of solidarity — are “the negation of the overlapping and interlocking carceral geographies of which the prison-industrial complex is one examplar — while absolutely nonexhaustive”.

TERRACE OF THE SEA (2009), FEB 13th, 8:30 pm
By Diana Allan

Filmed in an unofficial Palestinian Bedouin camp established in 1948 on a stretch of beach north of Tyre, in South Lebanon, Terrace of the Sea uses a collection of family photographs taken over three generations as a prism through which to reflect on memory, loss and history.

An anthropologist, author (her most recent book is “Refugees of the Revolution: Experiences of Palestinian Exile) and filmmaker, Diana Allan documents the experiences of the Ibrahim family, who have been making a living as fishermen for generations. The film looks at their relationship to work and to the physical environment and how they’ve persevered in this ‘temporary’ home.

Produced at Harvard’s Sensory Ethnography Lab, Terrace of the Sea is a haunting work, a meditation on the process of memory and on the distances between photography and film, land and sea and - between seeing and being seen.

during the first sessions, the curation was based on my immidiate community that bonded during the lockdown. we shared a desire for something radical to happen and coming together felt more like organising an already existing body. how would it happen now when the scale and stakes are so much bigger and at the same time honour and celebrate all the already existing initiatives, collectives, and projects that have been carving out this path for our community to exist (and still do).
we posted on ig our different workload and as ppl would come to help we would discuss ideas. we tried to establish a reciprocal relationship. we also gave open invitations to some to come up with ideas that would take the chance to be ambitious. 93 events and 250 artists showed in sessions. personal favorites were performances where the need to be on stage was tangible, the extensive applauses echoing in the building, and seeing ppl that otherwise would not care/dare to enter a “regular” theatre and suddenly were exposed to some powerful works.

Vox non Incerta by Stella Christou @outersnc with Savina Yannatou @savina_yannatou as the lead, was a wild dream - Demetris @dshmms designed the lights so beautifully. Despina Michailidou @purple_queer_butterfly who i had seen on tv 20 years ago advocating for lgbtq rights and inspired me to be the grown up i am today was now hosted by me, Gaya de Madeiros @gayademedeiros being an honourable guest cleaned stage on her own, Alexis Vassiliou @alexis.vassiliou told me to only let 50 people in and we let in 110 (it had to seen by more people - see photo with sweat on the floor) - everybody still talking about it, Stavros Karayanni, @a_man_to_pet , @kristapapista , such legends, genre and style defying movies, discussions, presentations etc etc personal highlight was Kakies Ginekes performance that I performed while I had covid and dare to say smashed it. this work by endrosia @endrosia opened up the new kipriaka sketsakia x john waters genre, i hope to see more.

@lexistenceispain offered technical support and designed lights and sound for all of it - no one like him
