We Live in a world of critics and so Rogue Wave Sculpture Show must have one. And we must laugh at ourselves.

“What and Who” by Leida Englar for Rogue Wave 2024.

The Art Critic is BACK.
This “Sculpture” appeared a few years ago at the first Art Crawl. Then reappeared at RW2022. I believe we are all critics of ourselves and others so here she is.

Leida Englar has been a practicing artist since 1974. One of the founding members of Shadowland Theatre, she helped Lin Barnett in creating the Rectory Gallery and assisted in the Saving of the Old Island School that became Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts. Also, with Jerry Englar and Jim Belisle, she created the Fake Art School. A Watercolourist that loves Mother Nature and having fun.

It was a glorious celebration @gibraltarpointto yesterday. Lovely to see so many Friends out to support and honour this place that has and continues to inspire thousands of artists from Toronto and beyond. Much gratitude to the original group of individuals who led the charge to save our beloved Gibraltar Point in the late 90s,many of whom were in attendance yesterday. Thank you to @englarleida for sharing this powerful story at the Party. Thank you @ausmalik and from Ana Seranno and Karen McCarthy @ocaduniversity for sharing in our celebration! Shoutouts to the @gpca.raisetheroof crew - @aprilhickox, @alizezorlutuna @lisacristinzopainting and @ilenesovaartist. Miss out on yesterday’s fundraising? ROGUE WAVE IS BACK! This Toronto Island outdoor exhibition of installation art will run on the ground on Ward’s and Algonquin Islands, from September 15 to October 20, 2024.

The theme of Rogue Wave 2024 is TRANSFORMATION: In the spirit of rogue waves – unpredictable, causing disruptions, affecting change, and with short notice – artists devise their own creative response to this theme. The exhibit involves 15 artists: professional, emerging and collectives. The works are site-specific, created or re-installed on the Island.

Take the ferry to Ward’s Island from the Jack Layton Ferry terminal. Maps of installation locations are posted along the route, as well as linked from posters and maps by QR code to the website torontoislandart.org

We acknowledge the land we are on is the traditional territory of the Mississauga of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and Wendot Peoples.

If you’re looking for something to do today, check out the gallery @theriv_kitchen this beautiful Sunday! Today is the last day to catch the show where four of my original paintings are on exhibit alongside 13 other wonderful artists!

Photos are from the École des Faux/Fake Art School exhibit opening party on July 3.

#FakeArtSchool is an art collective that is based @gibraltarpointto in a shared studio space.

Maritime Shoe Rebuilding, Gouache, 2024.

Fell in love with this scene during a visit to the east coast a couple of summers ago. The business is permanently closed and there is only one show cobbler in Saint John, NB now.

This new work will be on exhibit @theriv_kitchen all month long alongside work from Fake Art School artists - the collective who helped to save the old Island School building and create @gibraltarpointto as we know it now.

Art opening is tomorrow between 7-9 pm and the exhibit runs to July 28.
