I am notorious for being bad at keeping up with the things that have been happening in my life so here’s my attempt to catch you up on the last few months…swipe for your fill ..

The Eno is so culturally embedded that it’s easy to take for granted. 60 years ago the Eno River valley was almost dammed and flooded for a reservoir, but a grassroots initiative started by a few neighbors living along the river changed the course of history, as told in this zine made in collaboration with the Eno River Association. >>

We folded over 200 zines to distribute freely at @enoriver’s 60th anniversary benefit concert at @carolinatheatredurham. The zines were designed to fit on a standard letter size paper in black and white so that ERA can continue printing, folding, and sharing them indefinitely.

The zine was a collaborative effort!

Joe Liles (left), longtime resident artist of ERA, provided his illustrations of the Eno fauna and flora that he’s drawn over the years. (Joe was the first teacher at NCSSM and knows entirely too much lore about Durham… a legend 🙂‍↕️)

@klgraywill (center), creator of Hyperlocal, designed the zine - pulling together archival research, historical milestones, interviews, etc. into a bite-size story that resonates!

@mnye10 (right), longtime volunteer at ERA, supplied dozens of newspaper snippets, maps, and physical media as reference for the zine and for a deep-dive pop-up exhibit. He is a tireless advocate of local history and this collaboration would not have happened without his passion for the Eno!

@rosalimusic (not pictured) also provided illustration support, making a hand-drawn illustration for the zine of John Blackfeather Jeffries of the Occoneechee, who blessed the Eno.

Over the years, ERA has fought back against many commercial developments along the Eno - apartments, shopping centers, sewer lines, landfills, and a highway. The rapid development in Durham has not made this easy.

When @cityofdurhamnc originally proposed damming the Eno for a reservoir in ‘65, the community pushed back! They brought the community to hike, canoe, do flora inventories, host history talks, and formed ERA in ‘66 and established West Point on the Eno as a State Park in ‘73,

Countless community members wrote in personal letters to save the Eno, like the one bundled with the zine here, a re-print from the Durham Morning Herald in

Spent a little time hiking in one of the places where we feel our boy the most. ❤️💔 @enoriver

As life keeps moving forward, we’ve found there are times when we feel a little disconnected from Jack. It’s such a strange feeling because he is on our minds constantly, but somehow you can still miss that feeling of closeness to him.

So we are learning to be intentional about finding it. Taking these hikes together, talking about Jack, remembering him, and being in a place where we feel him all around us makes it a little better.

I truly don’t know how I would walk this journey without Chris beside me. We are figuring out how to carry this together, one day at a time.

I just hope our boy is looking at us and is proud of how we’re doing it. ❤️

Some views of our incredible weekend of plein air painting in Orange County! Saturday was in Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Sunday was in Fews Ford, Eno River State Park. Today was my favorite, using a broken piece dangling from the closed suspension foot bridge as the main attraction.

Definitely need to paint more outside!

Nothing Abides"....even after a 2-3 yr hiatus
.
Excited to join an amazing cast of story and sound weavers for this 60th Anniversary Benefit Concert for the Eno at Carolina Theater, organized by @enoriver
.
Brian Howe and I will be adapting our piece, Nothing Abides, a dialogue through sound and poetry that we originally debuted in August of 2023. The piece emanated from six months of being writers in residence at @culturemillnc participating in the evolution of a community care practice and dance theater performance called Eclipse, which turns bricks signifying those laid by the Black builders of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill into amplifiers for their voices and legacies, reframing the university's own creation myth
.
Get ya tickies!

What a joy to work on this commission for @enoriver for their 60th anniversary! We kept this one simple - black and white and 8.5x11” so that they can be easily copied and reproduced in the future. We are excited to distribute these freely at the benefit concert at the @carolinatheatredurham!

It was a truly collaborative effort:
📝 Zine design, copy, research by @klgraywill
🎨 Map & Flora/Fauna assets by Joe Liles
✍️ Illustration support from @rosalimusic
📚 Archival research support from @mnye10

These will of course be available in the @hyperlocaldispatch vending machine at the @durhamfoodhall, but not until after they make their debut at the Eno River Benefit Concert this Saturday!

(Bonus: some of my personal phone and film memories at the Eno - hiking and swimming at the quarry and turtle hole - are pictured behind the zine spreads 😌)
