In my sadness at the passing of Dolly Parton, I have been retracing where I have acknowledged her impact on my life in what I have written. I have no shame in disclosing the tears her passing has brought to my redneck eyes.

Yeah, back in the months preceding the ‘True North’ show opening in Palma de Mallorca at @galeria_fermay in 2023, I agreed with @tonifrr, a fellow curator, owner of the gallery and longterm compadre, that I didn’t want to do a print publication; that I wanted to put it all online so that more people would have free access to the discourse.

The simple truth is that this is one of the shows that brought me the greatest personal joy and that I also feel that the book-length text—freely available to you online—is one of the signature pieces I have written, rather eccentric and nutty, but frankly, credible nonetheless.

Just check out truenorthproject dot org. Dolly is soooo in there at the core.

It’s one of the pieces of my writing I know would have brought a smile to my father Denton’s lips.

Nah! Kinda Grumplestilskin on acid since receiving an email yesterday from a museum director–resent an hour ago—who has the temerity to describe me as being “known as a curator of painting” to ask me to write a text about a shite painter they feel obliged to show for whatever reason. That’s not gonna happen.

I am a curator. The only painting I write about is what I can discuss without feeling like a fraud. And, yes you probably expect me to post work by @janice.mcnab @bettinacarl2 @inabierstedt @alexhudsonhq @enriquemarty @maurobonacina Claire de Jong or various other painters whose work I have written about over the years, all those other painters whose work I have long advocated without being so trashy as to drop the big names.

That’s all fine. But I hope there is still enough life in me to show works by the likes of @norahnona whose work I am putting in this post. I can still imagine new shows.

I am a curator, not a “curator of painting”. So f**k you very much unnamed Northern European museum….

The paths we walk.... I was recently called a ‘Western European” by a twenty-something African-American postgrad student. I simply avoided discussing the sobriquet.

When I discuss Antwerp or Belgium in general with @pablo.a.padilla.jargstorf or @enriquemarty I don’t ever need to explain the hyperbolic. I have walked the outline of the former city walls that once, like a Rubens’ pissing rhino, marked out ‘The Spanish Fury’.

I know the big-breasted Jewish chicks with lips sweeter than wine who, like me, have never really been eradicated.

I only met Begonia—she was married in for the sherry casks from Jerez—about three times. After I had been in a coma with meningitis at the age of 6, my hair remained strawberry blond, but my eyebrows became black. She grabbed my head and kissed them: “Bluck! Bluck! Bluck!” Eventually I understood what she was saying and that, apparently, I looked a bit like her brother, the marqués, who had come to our christening but snorted throughout.

I went with her to St Margaret’s Chapel in Edinburgh Castle, one of those “left footer” places of pilgrimage that still exist in Scotland and people like to ignore. Bertha pulled a few strings and before I knew it, two priests were genuflecting, insisting I renounced sin and found my way back to the one true faith.

Begonia was pretty cool. Still kneeling she said to the Scottish laddie priests in a gruff whisper: “His father has red hair.” as if it explained everything. After that we went for lunch at the Caledonian and she kept rubbing my “bluck” eyebrows.

#ExhibitionTip | Highly Recommend! – Currently @keteleer_gallery #antwerp until May 2, 2026, @enriquemarty presents a world slightly off balance.

In ‘Storm Scenes’, landscape is no longer a backdrop but a restless field where images, bodies, and histories collide. A quiet nod to Giorgione’s 'Tempest' lingers, but here the tension never resolves. The storm is not an event.

Small, intricate panels draw you in, while sculptural forms pull fragments out of the pictorial space and into the room. You don’t just look, you navigate. There are whispers here of Jan Brueghel the Elder and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, yet the familiar harmony of their worlds slips into something more unstable. Humans, animals, objects, histories coexist, but without hierarchy. Everything is connected, and nothing is fully in control.

Works such as ‘Storm Scenes’ linger: a vertical cascade of fruits, plants, and animals, echoing the theatrical abundance of a Baroque cornucopia. It speaks of growth, but equally of overload, decay, and the delicate balance that holds it all together.

@keteleer_gallery mysterious worlds in explicitly figurative narrative symbolism, fire and masks, animals and landscapes. As well @enriquemarty as @antoineroegiers drag you down some worthwhile rabbit holes with respect for, you could say “tribute to”, there masterly predecessors in the arts. As a nice extra , a very friendly and interesting meeting with @leemans_koen #antwerpartgallery
