On June 14th, we gathered to learn about and celebrate the cross-cultural history between Punjabi and Mexican communities in California. The evening began with an embroidery activity featuring traditional Otomi and Phulkari motifs, led by @that.art.party and @monageorge. We then screened two films: Trokas Duras by @buffalotearz, and Harvest Party at Camp Two by @rillest and @reaapuri, followed by a hybrid panel discussion with the directors and Luis Valentin (@daylaborernetwork). The evening was concluded with three multimedia performances by @atomicamor, @duniyadanceanddrum, and Bajra y Maíz (@riverotterradio, @givemolove, @sinna.minz, @mirzaph00l, @fragrant_hawa, @amuatma, @imli.ix). @adityaskitch provided us with delicious bites to keep us fed through the night and bodyischai kept us refreshed with a lovely horchaita. Special thanks to @m0ssey and @amuatma for MCing, and moving us along through the night.

Brown Thumbs was also a call to action and fundraiser for De Sol a Sol Colectiva, an organization supporting undocumented farmworkers through mutual aid. Together, we were able to raise and donate $1,465 toward their work.

To celebrate BIPOC communities, to honor their art and histories is an act of resistance. To find common ground with one another is how we collectively build power in a system that seeks to divide us. Brown Thumbs was a space where people came together to learn, celebrate, and connect across cultural lines. It was also an opportunity to showcase artists from these lineages whose work we are inspired by.

To everyone who contributed their time, resources, creativity, and energy to bringing this event to life: thank you. Gratitude to all the volunteers, and everyone who stuck around after to help us clean up. And thank you to everyone who came and joined us on this ongoing journey. Photography by @hunt_the_bay.

I love dancing polkas from Chihuahua and other northern Mexico states. These dance traditions traces back to German and Czech immigrants who settled in Texas and northern Mexico, bringing their accordions with them, and it’s been part of northern Mexican culture ever since. Stay tuned for info on my dance company’s 30th anniversary show at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in September. #folkorico #folkloricodancers
