Yulia Mahr and PJ Harvey in conversation.

The London Review of Books and Studio Richter Mahr recently joined forces to host ‘Working Methods: 2’, the second instalment in a series of intimate discussions centred on the intricacies of artistic practice. This ongoing series delves into the often-unseen labour behind creative endeavours, offering insights into the processes that shape artistic expression, and the language used to articulate them.

The intimate event opened with an in-depth examination into the working methods of two distinguished artists: musician, writer, and artist Polly Harvey, and Yulia Mahr, artist and co-artistic director of Studio Richter Mahr. Their conversation provided a rare glimpse into the unique ways they approach their craft, exploring not just the mechanics of creativity but also the philosophies and narratives that underpin their artistic journey.

As the conversation unfolded, the focus expanded into a broader dialogue about artistic processes, moderated by Sean Burns – artist, writer, editor, and former resident at Studio Richter Mahr. Among those joining the discussion were Holly Blakey, choreographer; Sean Burns, artist, writer, and editor; Jon Day, author; Xiaolu Guo, writer and filmmaker; Campbell King, musician; Penny Martin, editor of The Gentlewoman; Yulia Mahr, artist; Michael Morris, producer; Enuma Okoro, writer and curator; Bengi Ünsal, director of the ICA London; and Alex Zeldin, playwright, amongst others.
