Every summer and fall I work with kids. This is my second summer (in the same program) teaching theatre camp to children on Long Island.

We have the students for one hour a day four times a week. The show took 20 hours to create a full half hour show. These kids are wonderful and it’s such a rich experience.

Last year our camp end show was 101 Dalmatians.

This year because it’s an orthodox camp, something called the Three Weeks of Sorrow fall during our show.

It is a period of mourning in Judaism that commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem.

I had never heard of the 3 weeks but it is fascinating.

The three weeks of sorrow means that “No joy and no show can display any happiness.”

So Jim and I sat down and put together a show on the plight of Jewish people. Called “The Journey.”

This is the last week of the summer and we have a show this week. Wish us luck!

Lately, we've seen an increase in shows with minimalistic sets. Now imagine everything from the set to the props was only five folding chairs. That was exactly the challenge I took on in high school. In a competition called Envision Shakespeare, we were given a scene from one of Shakespeare's plays and five chairs to use for the scene. The rest was up to our creative interpretations. After practicing for a year, we'd compete against the other schools, and in my 10th grade year, my team won! Winning is great, but the day is always a fun filled day with other theater kids, Shakespeare trivia, and acting workshops. My senior year, I got to head this committee, and I can say that this was something that truly enhanced my high school experience.
