HUGE congrats to RCA boxer Jesus on bringing home the W against a strong and determined opponent. Jesus executed the game plan and displayed tremendous ring generalship in a fast-paced and action-packed match. Above all Jesus showed amazing composure after taking a hard shot in the final round. He collected himself and brought it straight to his opponent to earn the W. Major mahalos to Credit Boxing for putting on a great show and to @coach_rons_boxing for being a great opponent 🤙🏾

Remember kids, you don’t rise to the occasion. You sink to the level of your training 💡

I do my best to always remember that telling isn’t teaching. I am constantly working to find ways to deepen my boxers understanding of techniques, especially fundamentals. As a coach/teacher it’s my responsibility to not only teach them the technique but to teach them the thinking that is behind it. 🧠

Give me six hours to cut down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe 🪓 👊🏽

A lot of coaches despise wrapping hands and rightly so, the process can be stressful and time consuming. Over the years I’ve learned to love wrapping hands. It’s a skill I take immense pride in as a coach and one that I am constantly evolving and improving. Most importantly it gives me time to not only calm my boxer down but also myself. It’s akin to moving meditation for me. A time to quiet the voices in my head and focus on a singular task and not all the what ifs you ask yourself before a fight. What do you do to relax before a fight? Comment below!

This pebble wrestler is learning how to bigwall…

Super thankful to @szutingyi and @climbersofcolor for this 4-day bigwall course in Index, WA.

@dekarabaw shared with me a scholarship to take a 4-day bigwall course in Index, WA. I happened to be in Squamish—3.5 hours away—and Index was on my drive home. So I applied immediately. And got the scholarship.

I think the scholarship speaks to people like @aroseonarock who make it possible for BIPOC climbers to get access to this kind of instruction. And paying qualified, hella experienced BIPOC instructors. It’s a win-win. A testament to @aroseonarock, who formerly spearheaded the rock programs for @climbersofcolor.

Big plans ahead. Still got a lot of practice to do. Jumarring, lowering out, pendulum’ing, aid leading, hauling, site management, poop strategy (yes, poop strategy). And not dropping shit. I… dropped things.

Bigwall is all about efficiency. Doing the small things well. On repeat.

Psyched to also do my first aid lead too. What could’ve been a 5.11a layback & crack climb turned into a C1 (beginner-friendly) aid.

I wasn’t expecting my time in Washington to feel like a homecoming—coming home to myself, to community, to love and care.

To be honest, in the weeks leading up to this trip, I considered canceling. I questioned my willingness to accept the risks of climbing and going into the mountains. My autoimmune/inflammatory conditions also clouded my confidence.

But these landscapes continue to have an indescribable pull on me. As I traveled through the state, that child-like wonder returned as I gazed upon the peaks. The wildness within me, suppressed by trauma and avoidance, resurfaced slowly.

It’s incredible to see how my relationship with climbing and the outdoors changed over those weeks. I’m deeply grateful for the spaces/people that facilitated this healing. Starting with my AMTL2 course with @alpineinstitute — I’m thankful for my instructors/guides @krausieklimbs, @the_alex_fletcher, @talilevin, Chad, and my fellow participants for helping me rediscover safety and love in climbing again.

This newfound confidence, combined with the support of my community, pushed me to challenge myself. Climbing the Kautz route on Tahoma with @jorgedeaventura and @amancaypottery showed me I can do hard things. Even amid grief/trauma, I can find joy. Even in tough conditions, there’s delight in doing hard things with people who you love.

Lastly, the SPI Course with @szutingyi and @climbersofcolor made me feel held and supported as an outdoor leader. Yes, there are physical, social and psychological risks in these experiences, but the work is also incredibly rewarding. I have much to learn from peer mentors like @angelito_skates, @mayaguchi, @can.guner_, @aivy09, @wolf.phie, @enzo206 and @aroseontherock,— and I also know that I have so much to offer.

Washington’s soul-stirring landscapes reminded me why I climb. Leaving was hard but I’m grateful to have fallen in love with this place and its people.

As I settle into this chapter in Wyoming, I’m not sure what’s next, but I know I’ll continue to follow the wildness in my heart ❤️‍🔥

Group photos!

From mid-May in Taiwan to summer in Washington State, I have taught many courses - Advanced Anchoring, Big Wall, Alpine Navigation and Efficiency, SPI course and SPI exam, Crack Climbing clinic, and another Big Wall.

Some of the participants are returned students and I was so happy to witness their improvements over the years and am ready to keep following their journeys. Some of them were new students and I feel privileged to be their mentor.

In the past I was not so much of a group photo person but I now am a fan. It reminds me of the good times! And seeing those smiles makes me believe that I must have done something right ❤️

Even though my fur babies haven't quite joined the club yet. 🤣

A few weeks ago, I took my AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Assessment and I passed! :) Being a climbing instructor has been my dream for some time and I still can’t quite believe that I did it! I have a really incredible support system of mentors, family, and friends who are consistently down to dangle on a rope as I practice or give me kind advice; I love you all so much! Heart full, thank you ❤️‍🔥

The following photos are from guiding and mock guiding over the past couple of years with @climbersofcolor and @shemovesmountains. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by such sweet and stoked community, some of whom are tagged in this post but there are countless more! :)

I was SO psyched to check out the new @edgeworks_bellevue expansion I dropped everything to go climb and convinced some of my good friends to come as well.

Living in south Seattle every sport gym is a 45 minute drive in any direction (not counting traffic) and if I'm going to go that far, it may as be somewhere amazing and I feel the expansion is just that! Lots of different terrain.

Thanks for coming out @silv.erbacksamurai @lalalalizzieee @jiaolong_89 @talldarkandhandsome82 @curious_consciousness @enzo206 @zacharylaschober

Pro tip: those holds are NEW NEW so don't wear your favorite clothes or they might get fuzzy from brushing on the texture.
